The last Eye of 2025...And my first Christmas one!

Festive titbits include the local political branch which came a Christmas cropper thanks to AI slop, and the council red tape that denied a village its full set of seasonal lights...ho ho no!
Tory-run Slough has “lost track” of 500 people living in temporary accommodation, meaning it underestimated its spending by £10m. It blames staff turnover and incompetence, and a new IT system; but while the blunder was spotted in October 2024, officers have only just fessed up to councillors.

Catching up on shoddy news: already delayed data on health injustices faced by people with learning disabilities is retracted. Post-Covid, it's the kind of data that should be treated with urgency. Words from information commissioner John Edwards on R4 earlier stayed with me; he stated obvious but ignored truths, like how councils must (but often don't) act, information's seen as a compliance issue but it affects lives, councils must act with 'curiosity and humanity'

Words matter. People and families don't forget them. I know it as a sibling and through @sibs.org.uk

(I've just finished a project looking at the experiences of people of colour who also have a learning disability - decades on, people remember and feel the impact of ableism and racism combined.)
Growing up with a sister who has a learning disability, I’ve seen people shout the R word at her. That was in the 80s and 90s. Now we’re in the 2020s and I am seeing world leaders and tech leaders use it and I cannot begin to tell you how devastating that is.

So many unhelpful headlines and narratives supporting the feckless/burden angle. Words like 'soaring' and lumping mental health in with autism and ADHD isn't great for people and families with genuine support needs. These are distinct issues, but obv they can coexist.

Reform, rhetoric over reality - racist rhetoric too, but this was recorded before the latest bout of 'free speech' from Farage and his municipal minions (eye on Staffordshire, obvs).
Reform is reporting £331 million in savings across the councils it runs, but Private Eye’s Rotten Boroughs writer Saba Salman says the claims are complete guff.

How can a govt claim to create 'strong foundations' and 'secure futures' while failing (again) to fully support SEND or social care (like now, not in 2028)?

SEND: early intervention, supports future potential.
Social care: can prevent health crisis and free up NHS beds.
