Perhaps increased manufacturing employment feels comforting, safe, how things "should be". Nostalgia is a powerful thing.

Here's the core absurdity of sinking so much into restoring domestic manufacturing:

"This is a lot of economic pain to throw around for an industry that decreasingly uses people."
This is fascinating: On the pod, @kedseconomist.com cites the example of a US manufacturer of board games to explain what's wrong with Trump's tariffs and why unleashing so much pain and turmoil to restore manufacturing is an incoherent goal.

This translates well into many domains.

When we automated welding, we traded high quality@low volumes for low quality@much higher volumes (+ higher control costs).

Welding is arguably less complex than writing, its volume/quality trade-off is different. Plus LLMs err in less predictable ways.
Talked to UIPath CEO Daniel Dines about automating the workforce and have spent a lot of time thinking about this exchange since www.theverge.com/decoder-podc...

My company forced us to use GitHub Copilot as some kind of efficiency measure. I spent a good three hours today trying to tweak a couple lines of code while it gave me confidently wrong suggestions on what to do. I finally gave up and found what I was looking for on my first Stack Overflow hit.

A) Trump personally picked the tariff formula from a list of options
B) did so over “numerous more sophisticated approaches” offered
C) formula has Navarro’s fingerprints all over it

The Trump tweet about impeaching any president who presides over a big stock market drop is bogus. But this is a real Truth Social post from last year.

Good NYT article. While most analysts focus on the things China can do to boost consumption by enough that it can begin to lead economic growth, Bradsher again focuses on why this is easier said than done.

Congestion pricing is an unqualified triumph. One of the most immediately, strikingly successful public policies of my lifetime.
“The MTA as a whole is averaging 448K more public transit riders per day this year…The MTA ridership growth since congestion pricing went into effect is almost 50% larger than the total ridership of America’s next-largest subway system.” bettercities.substack.com/p/congestion...

Will this make most GOP voters worse off? Absolutely.
Yet they prefer it to the alternative - a statement to how mass mis-information lead to perverse outcomes.
The Trump tax plan only works by cutting public services.

This incredible visualization combines the potential tax cuts (which mostly go to the rich) and loss of services (mostly borne by the poor).

It is a giant wealth transfer from the poorest to the richest. budgetlab.yale.edu/news/250319/...

This 100%. The acts of "quiet appeasement" by so many of America's universities (and corporations, but that's another topic) are not just shameful, they are also terrible strategy in the face of authoritarianism.

Trump is whitewashing American history, removing not just people, but also the stories, images, and values to anyone who does not conform to his impoverished vision of America.

Apropos @kvaloy.bsky.social i @dagensnaeringsliv.bsky.social
