Officially moth-obsessed, also easily distracted by birds, butterflies, flies, wasps and spiders. Musically devoted to an (un)holy trinity of Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen.
Yesterday while checking the moth trap site for lurkers, I disturbed a Peacock butterfly, which fluttered out of the area near the windowbox and settled under the patio table. Don’t think I’ve ever seen one on the wing in November before! @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Another species added to the garden list courtesy of leafmines, the Birch-feeding Ectoedemia occultella. #teammoth @pmandrews1973.bsky.social

6:14 last night, nothing new, no migrants, most interesting probably a late MdJ (I’ve never had one after October before) that sadly perished in a spider’s web. #teammoth @pmandrews1973.bsky.social

Not had much success finding mines in Birch in the garden or up the street despite there being a quite a few Birch trees. But today I found Phyllonorycter ulmifolliela, and Stigmella luteella in the garden, latter new for SK10 @pmandrews1973.bsky.social @vc28nature.bsky.social #teammoth

The Mottled Umber is still on the patio window where it flew when I released it this morning, it’s now almost 10pm! #teammoth

Another attempt at leafmine rearing. A possible Ectoedemia quinquella (very few records in VC38)has pupated on its leaf, so into a pot it goes… #teammoth @vc28nature.bsky.social

15:6 last night, bulk of the numbers made up by LBAM & R-g Carpet. December Moth & Mottled Umber NFY, the latter a lurker by the patio window which has cheered me up no end. Also Ypsolopha ustella. #teammoth @pmandrews1973.bsky.social

Instead of a visit from Wogan, I had one from Baldrick. He left me a Turnip (and three Caddisflies turned up to have a look). #teammoth

More mines from the street trees on Blackberry Lane B74. An overlooked ornamental Beech sp. produced multiple mines of Stigmella tityrella. #teammoth

A new plant gall for me among the fallen leaves in my garden: the Poplar Spiral Gall (Pemphigas spyrothecae) caused by an aphid on Poplar trees. @galling.bsky.social #plantgalls

Only one LBAM in the trap last night, complete waste of electricity! But this smart Hairy Shieldbug on the wall was some compensation. #teammoth #shieldbugs

A drake Shoveler (first since Jan 2024) was the highlight of an early morning walk at Hill Hook LNR, also 50+ Black-headed Gulls, Nuthatch, Goldfinch, Blue & Long-tailed Tits. Fewer Tufted Duck than recently. @ecorecord.bsky.social @pmandrews1973.bsky.social

The Stigmella atricapitella larva has now exited the mine & pupated on the inside of the bag I was keeping the leaf in. Not quite sure what to do with it now! #teammoth @vc28nature.bsky.social

Can’t remember if I’ve recorded 20-Plume Moth in November before; just found this one on a doorframe in the hall! #teammoth @pmandrews1973.bsky.social

Stigmella basiguttella on Oak, Clarence Rd., B74. The egg is laid on the top of the leaf, and can be seen at the beginning of the mine if you zoom in. First records from VC38 portion of SK10 since 2012. #teammoth @vc28nature.bsky.social @pmandrews1973.bsky.social

Two active Stigmella trimacullela mines in a Poplar leaf blown down in the garden yesterday. There were a couple more leaves with what looked like old mines of the same species. #teammoth

Working hard on my Oak leafmines, I think the first could be Stigmella roborella as larva is pale & egg on underside of leaf, ruling out S. ruficapitella. Second possibly Phyllonrycter quercifolliella, with pinkish larva? #teammoth @vc28nature.bsky.social
