💙📚 New Year, new book challenge. Every other year I try for 31 books by the end of the month in both January and December. I'm a speed reader hence the high total. This still involves spending most of the month reading, and January goes past very fast.

Interesting aspect - kinda spurned by argument with a local bore in the neighbourhood Facebook group.

I'll start 🧵w. seemingly unrelated Q, but bear w. me:

If an alcohol-serving business is a focal community hang-out point where you're likely to just turn up & run into ppl you know, is it a pub?

Done with my January reading spree. It's always hard to decide how to split the genres but it's no surprise fantasy and mystery were heavily featured. For full list

This morning I am thinking about all of the work projects I need to move forward but are stalled because of a desire to move slowly and carefully... meanwhile, the university - including many of my library colleagues - are insisting we have to move quickly, risks be damned, on AI.

Kou Machida is a punk rocker—his discography includes 10 albums. He published a volume of poetry in 1992 and a novel in 1996. He won the 2000 Akutagawa Prize for Rip It Up. Machida's writing has been compared to rakugo story-telling and to the work of early 20th century self-destructive I-novelists.

A few days ago, I stood in the graveyard of an 1100 year old church, getting damper and damper in the drizzling rain.

A woman walked into the graveyard, waved, said hello, and, as we had previously arranged, handed me a paper bag full of human bones.

The life of a churchwarden is a strange one...

Had an intriguing editorial discussion recently: how did people in the past talk about 'minutes' when they didn't have watches or standardised times? How does that affect your thinking?

Come down an Elizabethan/Jacobean rabbit hole with me.

This has been rattling around in my brain for days and I finally dug it up from my old teaching notes, but I don't have a citation. It's from a Mexico City newspaper from the 1840s (I assume in translation). Does anyone recognize it?
