Lund University had an open call for guest professors last year, and the response has been way over expectations with an extremely high quality of applications. As a result, I am very happy that Yingda Chen from Virginia Tech will be a visiting professor at the Center for Mathematical Sciences […]

Absolutely gorgeous essayWorth a read (via @drnoble) by @tg that starts with why RSS clients look like email, but moves into SoMe and how we imported anxiety without cause.

Interesting essay by @tg on why RSS clients look like email, any how this imported anxiety without cause. Lovely design details in this too.

This is particularly annoying because after converting my kid's laptop to Linux with #endoften, school WiFi certificates would not allow connection so we had to switch back to Microsoft to allow school work submissions 🤬
#microsofttax.

DKK 60 million on Microsoft and Google software licences *every year* paid Danish state schools. And imagine how much government IT is paying on top.
It's time to start calling it the #microsofttax

I was trained to write the Abstract last when preparing an academic paper: finish up the paper first and then summarize it. Over the years I've reversed this: I now write the Abstract as early as possible. This forces me to focus on a few key points, and gives structure to the rest of the […]

These ice lenses are giving me a tough time in processing today, they're everywhere. But if I believe the satellite data, they also shouldn't exist. It appears we are underestimating surface melt* in Antarctica.
