It’s election time in Newfoundland and Labrador — and beef with Quebec is back on the menu.
Can Newfoundland Finally Stand up to Quebec?
This week, host Sam unpacks how a 1969 deal turned Newfoundland’s mighty river into Quebec’s cash cow, earning Hydro-Québec billions while leaving Newfoundland with scraps. Now, decades later, the province says it’s finally taking back control.

Releasing today - the 2025 regional living wages. Our takeaway this year - too many people are working long hours for incomes that don't cover a conservative estimate of essential household expenses.

Wow immigrants are almost entirely hardworking members of the community and America would be worse off trying to deport them all? You’re telling me this now for the first time
Via @acyn.bsky.social on Twitter - Trump says he's going to make an exception on deporting farm and hotel workers because farmers and hoteliers are mad that great people are being taken away. Watch for the way he dances around so he doesn't have to take any blame for this.

The NATO 2% goal has always been a shell game, but it is absolutely the lowest, of low hanging fruit, to fold the Coast Guard into the national defence budget (as other countries do) to substantially *increase defence spending. Maybe we could even fund effective SAR now?

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to announce that his government plans to meet the NATO benchmark target of two per cent of the country’s gross domestic product by the end of the current fiscal year ...

Just reposting this for all my Memorial University peeps wondering why they are being asked to get rid of more people.

It’s easy. This government has other priorities. It’s a choice.
The government of Newfoundland and Labrador's transfer to Memorial University (not including the medical school) was $371 Million in 2014. 11 years later it is $313 Million. Just ignore inflation...

You have to quite the galaxy brain to tell people you have increased the budget.

Not sure they’re going to be able to wedge a season 3 of Andor in the timeline. 😩

If you want to hear the best arguments against hydrogen as a climate solution, this podcast is for you!
Today on Volts: are we moving inexorably toward a "hydrogen economy"? No, says Joe Romm in his newly updated book. "Clean hydrogen" faces all the same limitations it always has, which will almost certainly confine it to expensive niche applications. Direct electrification is always preferable.
Taming the hydrogen hype
