AI is one of the most infuriating phenomena in the world because I'm here reading about how it killed a kid, then I go out into society and people are like, "well you have to admit it's good for some things" No

So I finally think I've worked out why Mabel was rejected at a very early age by her parents (and constantly attacked by them over the years):

She's blind in one eye = damaged goods.

As in, cannot see me out of her right-side peeper.

It's so cool we're boiling lakes, polluting neighbourhoods, stealing from millions of people and burning billions of dollars to do whatever the hell this is?

I suspect that fact that the vast majority of LLM users don’t seem to have received this (really very simple!) message is because the AI companies have a vested interest in us not understanding it. “ChatGPT is smart, it just makes mistakes sometimes” is much more marketable than the truth.
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Most of us called "AI denialists" are better described as "AI realists" because we are, in fact, brutally honest about the capacities, limitations, and social impacts of AI. We take AI as it is in the context of its deployment, and not as we wish it to be in some idealized situation.
Hm. Don't think I'm on board with calling AI skeptics/critics "denialists." Seems to obscure the fact that there is an ideological contestation at play, rather than, as with climate change, an empirical or even epistemological one.

People wondering less and less why I use @signal.org
Online advertising fuels widespread privacy and security violations, EFF’s @legind.bsky.social told @theverge.com. Meta “is putting WhatsApp’s 3 billion users at unnecessary risk, all for the sake of a monetization strategy no one asked for and no one wanted.”
WhatsApp’s rollout of ads will change the app forever
Some users want to switch to Signal instead.
