My experience is that LLMs are strongest at tasks that have dubious social value.
Using LLMs to write my cover letter yielded results finally. But … do we really need cover letters? Is this providing a socially useful signal, especially if they’re also read by an AI?

Right now using the slopmachine in a lot of industries only works if (a) you don't get caught or (b) you're the only one doing it. It's the classic situation of someone taking advantage of a default high quality good market to launder low quality goods into the mix.

this is a really good thread, and something we were discussing at dinner. my bet is that we’re going to need to see the rise of personal recommendations, networks where someone’s taste / curation directs people to certain higher quality writing
Thinking about the impact of LLMs on the way I earn a living - writing - and I wonder what the long-term impact will be.
On the one hand, LLMs do not seem capable of producing *good* writing, in the sense of original, engaging writing (they can manage clarity, though). But they can do *quantity.*

Putting my historian's hat on here. Jesse Jackson ran for president only after Harold Washington's mayoral victory in Chicago in 1983 demonstrated that a rainbow coalition message could be viable. Washington was a very important figure here, but he's not mentioned in most media reports today.

One thing I don't get are the academics who would praise Epstein's intellect, even now. I honestly didn't see it. Even on just two minutes acquaintance, he seemed like a standard fast-talking charlatan, someone who trotted out lots of big words with no real understanding. A very common type.

The whole claim of "AI makes software development more productive" has been extremely suspicious right from the start.
Software Developer productivity is an extremely hard to measure thing. It's an enormous struggle for every company in the field, and the ones pretending know, fool themselves.
