"The asbestos companies have, by this point, invested significant amounts of money in mines, distribution networks and factories; they have large amounts of sunk capital, and that is part of the motivation to create doubt about the health risks of asbestos for as long as possible."

At full council today I spoke about the outsize role high rents play in the cost of living crisis. I'm glad we voted for up to 85% council tax relief for families with kids. But affordable housing is the main fault line, and we must build more.

Chris van Tulleken's Ultra Processed People is absolute riot fodder. Everyone should read it, and eat better, and demand higher food protection standards. #Booksky

A local primary academy is planning to increase the number of branded items in its uniform. When does the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill come in to prevent this? One last squeeze of hard-pressed families. Academies were such a savage idea.

Lincolnshire has over 600 parish councils, which is nuts. Some of the smallest spend most of their money on admin rather than running anything, and merging them into more useful sizes isn't easy under current rules.

Trumps tariffs today brings into sharp relief how our isolated status post Brexit leaves us vulnerable - We must urgently and ambitiously reset our relationship with the EU as part of strengthening NATO so we can stand up to bullies wherever they are and whatever they threaten.

Earls! An etymology thread.

So. The core hereditary noble titles found in the UK and through much of Europe are a relic of the end of the Roman Empire, when control of the outlying regions was crumbling and the capital itself was collapsing into infighting.

I have asked officers at East Lindsey District Council to remove the council's website links to X due to the abuse issues. I expect this will be actioned soon. I doubt I'll be the only cllr making this request.

Get. Off. X.

This isn’t a moral thing. This is a protecting yourself thing. If you go over there to “verify” something and end up inadvertently viewing and thus downloading illegal images, you have – pay attention now – downloaded illegal images
so if Grok was a humanoid robot, at this point we'd simply take it behind the shed and blow its positronic 'brains' out

and everyone — including Asimov, rolling about in his grave — would agree that's the only sane and safe thing to do
Went to check if this screenshot (posted by @aric.bsky.social) was real (it is) and then made the mistake of also scrolling through Grok's replies on X. Still constantly cranking out sexualised images of young girls. Beyond bleak.

It's refreshing to hear an MP who understands the need for regulation of online platforms in such depth.
Earlier this week I spoke about online safety and how we can build a safe and open internet. I’ll be sharing snippets from my speech over the coming weeks, but if you’re interested in the topic then here it is in full. Buckle up - it’s 22 minutes long!
