The Roman architect Vitruvius, who wrote “De Architectura” in the first century B.C., is among history’s most influential minds of engineering, yet no buildings designed by him had ever been identified—until now.

I'm delighted to be confirmed as the new Editor for Archaeology & Art for the international journal Studia Celtica.

With a double-blind peer review policy the journal is an excellent place to consider publishing new archaeological research about the Celtic nations 😊

Look out 2027! New book on the Romans (but not Roman Scotland) currently being written
Some huge news from me. Just signed a contract to write my next book on the Romans for @headofzeus.bsky.social so a wee celebration and a huge thanks to Ben, Sarah & the team at the Soho Agency for making things happen. Roll on publication day (in 2027).

Cowane's Hospital in Stirling. Many years ago I read that when they were building up in this part of the town, they uncovered a Roman grave carved into the volcanic bedrock, now in a cellar around here. I've never been able to find the reference or building.

Can't escape Romans at Stirling Castle. These carvings, the Stirling Heads were hung on the ceiling of the Great Hall. These are the Roman Emperors. Marcus Aurelius in the foreground, Titus in the middle and Aurelius again.

Back in Stirling today and largely dodging rain showers and wondering why Stirling doesn't appear to have been more important to the Romans even though it's so important in later periods 🤔
