If you are an #engineering undergrad in 2025, and you do not have technical ownership on at least one significant extracurricular project, your job search is going to be very difficult.

I’ve never had the opportunity to try Ethiopian food, but surely (as you recently pointed out) having the lowest child mortality rate in history - by an incomprehensibly vast margin - is worth it?
The thing to understand - which the people peddling these fantasies often don't - is that the desire here isn't the 'past,' but being an aristocrat in a tightly controlled, authoritarian society.
They imagine a narrow hierarchy where they are, by dint of birth, at the top.

"Historical" TTRPGs will be like "our wizards are based on authentic medieval Western European beliefs about how magic worked", and I'll be like "are they really, or are they a bunch of 1970s Neopagan 'ancient witch cult' stuff in a funny hat", and the game will be like "those are the same thing".

Even in STEM disciplines, few students graduate knowing the vital foundational knowledge the degree is supposed to impart.
