I finally dusted off my poor, neglected, Mothership-focused blog to talk about one of the wildest gaming experiments I've ever experienced: injectorseat.wordpress.com/2025/10/16/m...

Am I the crazy one? The inability to make AI go away causes me so much rage. Is it me who has become out of touch?

@bretdevereaux.bsky.social Vic3 is deeply discounted right now... is it worth it? I remember reading your Vic2 blog series and it seemed you had pretty favorable opinions of that title.

If you are an #engineering undergrad in 2025, and you do not have technical ownership on at least one significant extracurricular project, your job search is going to be very difficult.

@joshhevert.bsky.social do you accept questions? I’m curious about parish registers and why they were kept, especially prior to the Reformation, since they represent meticulous demographic information on peasants who typically wouldn’t be documented in such a manner.

Where do you go for art references that aren't too badly contaminated by AI?

Itch's new content policy is:

1. We can't tell you what violates the rules.

2. If you violate the rules, we take all your money. Not just the money from that work, ALL your money from EVERYTHING you've ever made.

I don't care how much of a smol bean Itch is, this is not a viable platform.

I’ve never had the opportunity to try Ethiopian food, but surely (as you recently pointed out) having the lowest child mortality rate in history - by an incomprehensibly vast margin - is worth it?
The thing to understand - which the people peddling these fantasies often don't - is that the desire here isn't the 'past,' but being an aristocrat in a tightly controlled, authoritarian society.

They imagine a narrow hierarchy where they are, by dint of birth, at the top.

Dreams of feudalism.
Quick question: Are people insane?

@bretdevereaux.bsky.social wrt your latest acoup blog post on the peasantry, when (if at all) does the existence of the Catholic Church start to impact the availability of demographic data? Growing up, I distinctly remember meticulous record-keeping of most major life milestones... (1/2)

@bretdevereaux.bsky.social I am immensely curious about your TTRPG campaign setting, especially in light of your worldbuilding resource list and posts about coinage, etc… perhaps consider it for a post sometime?

"Historical" TTRPGs will be like "our wizards are based on authentic medieval Western European beliefs about how magic worked", and I'll be like "are they really, or are they a bunch of 1970s Neopagan 'ancient witch cult' stuff in a funny hat", and the game will be like "those are the same thing".

@bretdevereaux.bsky.social Is there a good English translation of Cicero’s “De Legibus” available online? I am trying to read up on the philosophical basis for natural law.

@bretdevereaux.bsky.social You've covered farming, textiles, and ironworking... how were buildings and infrastructure built in classical antiquity? To what extent were engineering and architecture different professions? Was most construction undertaken by the state or by wealthy individuals?
