Trump Against History
How is Trump changing our sense of who we are? We asked eminent Yale historian David W. Blight to round up some colleagues to consider the question. Here’s what they had to say.

I will be damned if I allow a bunch of Confederate-waving January 6th apologists give the American people a lecture on flag waving.

There is ZERO reason to enter an argument about patriotism with people who still worship traitors to America 150+ years later.

JUST IN

ICE agents arrested at least 2 people outside a San Francisco courthouse on Tuesday morning.

Video shows protesters surrounding an ICE mini-van with a man inside, banging on the van & opening its doors, trying to prevent the arrest.

Protests are growing outside court.

This isn’t a subjective view. You can see it in the data.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court ruled courts must assess the full context of a police encounter when determining what constitutes excessive force — not just the moments right before the lethal force.

Over 1,300 people were killed by police last year. This ruling will help hold the police accountable.

While it is understandable to focus attention on Trump’s attacks on democracy and the rule of law, we must not lose sight of the fact that it is the Republican Congress enabling his authoritarianism. Ignoring their complicity in Trump’s actions is a mistake—both legally and strategically.

This latest attack is about one thing: unchecked power.

It is time for my colleagues in the Republican Party to stand up to his growing authoritarianism.
