I am an astronomer and a student of history, although not necessarily in that order.

Weapon of choice is my Questar Seven.
The aurora seems to be heating up, here now (6:45pm Pacific time) forty miles northeast of Sacramento.

This woman reminds me of Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar, another Nobel laureate who led her country, was under house arrest, and later faced numerous charges, including corruption, after a military coup overthrew her elected government.

Trump doesn’t realize that she gave him a copy of her medal.

I’m as much a fan of provocative headlines as the next guy, but if you think Trump cares what anybody thinks about what happened on January 6, 2021, you haven’t been paying attention.

Enjoying wonderful Bortle 2 skies (SQM 21.9) up here just outside of Yosemite NP for a few days.

Caught two sporadics in as many snapshots this morning at 5:35am.

Here’s looking at you, Orion…

If you’d like to see Uranus, now’s a great time, as it’s just below the Pleiades in the early morning. Orion is rising in the southeast, with the Moon hidden.

Here’s a look at Venus and Jupiter this morning at 5:00am Pacific (Venus is the brighter of the two low in the pic…), and a totally lucky grab of Jupiter captured in daylight haze, taken at 1:00pm.

Jupiter pic taken via iPhone to my Questar 3.5 at 87.5x mag.

The winter constellations are coming back!! Here are Venus and Jupiter rising to greet the Pleiades, the Hyades, and my old friend Orion, emerging into light clouds this morning just before 5am Pacific time.

Here are two images of this morning’s rising moon, weighing in at a mere 1% full, and 22 hours from new. Finder view (6x) and full (87.5x) magnification through my Questar 3.5.

My wife snapped this young red-tailed hawk, who landed in a tree about two feet above my head, as we were on a walk this morning.

I underestimated my little 3.5, thinking that the other pictures I posted were from my Questar Seven.

These images of the Straight Wall and the Alpine Valley come from the Seven, and were taken this evening under mediocre skies; interesting to compare images.

The haze here has been terrible lately, so this image was a pleasant surprise.

Taken last night with iPhone and my Questar 3.5 at about 70x magnification.

From the Alpine Valley to the Straight Wall. Photo taken with iPhone and my Questar Seven.

This image is from a few years ago; I’ll try to replicate (improve) the image this evening.
