one thing I read here that still chases me is "cats were introduced in the UK during the Roman Empire, which clearly show they are invasive species"

This is wonderful, and something I always thought of Star Trek/Wars/Tolkien/etc and rest of the video games: simplistic models are fantastic for narrowing your storytelling or creating gameplay, but some folks think that the real life is like those simplistic models
The far right is obsessed with Lord of the Rings and Musk keeps posting about "hobbits" because modern scientific racism owes more to fantasy worlds and gaming systems than genetic science, and they see both as effective mediums for right-wing propaganda www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

The BBC is in crisis in the same way that GB News would be if you put Owen Jones on the board armed with a veto and plenty of coffee.

basically every 2024 truism is dead. Trump did not build a lasting multiracial coalition or turn young men into committed Republicans. You don’t need to cave on trans rights to win. The pundits have nothing left to tell you.

Not sure I quite agree with Tim. Sure the ideological and party machine specifics are unique to New York and the US.

But understanding that a willingness to fight, to highlight easy to grasp policies and shape discourse rather than chase polls and focus groups has lessons applicable to any society
“What lessons on pan-European politics can we draw from an election to an executive mayoralty?”

“No more than we can that of Anne Hidalgo?”

“But if we *had* to?”

“That it helps to be running on local issues against a loathed sex-pest who’s being savaged by the local lunatic in a beret?”

al malismo en tierras anglosajonas le llaman Vice Signalling y me parece un término igual de bueno que el popularizado por @tyrexito.bsky.social
It’s Vice Signalling. They are in an arms race to show off who can be the biggest evil bastard

estaba mirando Mythical Kitchen y me hace gracia la cantidad de invitados que opinan que la mejor comida del mundo son carne con patatas fritas, o en general cosas fritas, empanadas y rebozadas www.youtube.com/@mythicalkit...

I watched The Worricker Trilogy these days and it's depressing how utopic it is: politicians that actually care about the country, voters that actually get outraged by politicians' bad acts, and a press that does their job.

💥🤯Shocking findings from this new IMF working paper: inflation outcomes were similar between inflation targeting and non-inflation targeting countries, despite more aggressive rate hikes by the former.

Watching a comic con interview with Sigourney Weaver and they highlight only, and just only, the most successful horror and sci fi. And the interviews are only about that. It is so weird how dramas are buried in film history because now tastes are so compartimentalised.

Today I attended my first streamed funeral and burial. It was kind of weird but the distance to India made this the only option. My uncle went as a missionary there in the 60s, staying in a very modest congregation and town.
