We argue for @wpr.bsky.social that India's 'new normal' vis-a-vis Pakistan is both imprudent and dangerous that raises the stakes of the conflict without proportional benefits.

NPR just broke some big news: US government documents were accidentally left in a hotel printer in Anchorage, revealing the actual plan for the Trump-Putin summit. They show exactly what Trump intended.

The return of 🧵s!

Each weekend during the summer, I'll post (exclusively on Bluesky) a 🧵 "lecture" that uses my @wpr.bsky.social column to teach about some international relations concept.

Let's start with what can learn in this week's column!
Russia and Ukraine Are Both Still in This War for the Long Haul
With Operation Spiderweb, Ukraine demonstrated it has a lot of fight left. All that means is that the war is set to rage on.

Both sides have reached the sweet spot to claim victory and de-escalate the situation.
It remains possible that each side, having got missile strikes in, and with India having had what it can claim is the final word, could stop.

We now have:
- NYT citing an Indian official on three downed planes
- Reuters citing local gov't sources on three crashed jets, pilots in hospital
- The Hindu citing an Indian gov't official saying at least three crashed jets
These would represent heavy losses for the Indian air force.
NYT: "One Indian official confirmed the crash of three aircraft, but cautioned that the reasons were not clear. Two other Indian security officials confirmed reports that some Indian aircraft had gone down, but would not elaborate on the details"
