"Familiar Territory."
The air was cold and still, even as snowflakes fell from the clouded heavens. There was silence all around the frozen street, save for the sounds of boots trudging in snow and faint breaths. Step by step, Devon walked, the street lights above making the snowy ground and icy road sparkle. He couldn't let that distract him, though, his gloved hands clutching the Ofá he had with him. Already he was searching his environment for any motion or hint that he was being sought out. It didn't help that he knew he was close to entering Familiar Territory. The increasing fog in the distance was the lone clue, his silver eyes peering into it, knowing that once he crossed the threshold, it would be time. Realizing it was his last chance to prepare, he took off his gloves and checked his bag. It would be just him and whatever he had on hand, or whoever. Save for the magic he had picked up on his path, meager though it was, all he had was one protective spirit with him, and he had to hope it was enough. Unbuttoning the pocket on his jacket, he reached in, finding the seed with a single green sprout, was right there. For a few moments, he considered going for backup, but he could see the doors to buildings nearby icing over, the snowfall getting faster. The longer he waited, the more likely it was the cold snap would become more intense. A bow, a machete, the three spells he could remember and pull off, and a single protector against a spirit in its element. It would have to be enough. With trepidation he walked into the fog, feeling strange. There was that slipperiness of the mind, the urge to tune things out that so often came over humans as he entered a pocket of the spirit realm. Time seemed distant. The cold's bite had become less notable, even as he shivered. There were voices, whispering in languages he could not speak, but that his ears understood. To slip away, and wander and wonder, leaving the world he knew to be adrift and unmoored. Yet, he refused, striding ahead.… Ahead of him stood a bear that walked as a man. Towering in its unnatural approach, its gait slow, yet the closer it drew, the more Devon could hear a bitter wind blow. What spirit, he wondered, had created a Tether from this poor creature? If he survived, he would know. Some Tethers were known to speak. Others were primal and raw. It was a matter with few hard rules, but always there was intent. Capricious though some spirits were, they had reasons, as Tethers had reasons for accepting. Taking off his gloves despite the biting cold in his hands, Devon whispered low, his tone calm, focused on himself and not the realm, lest he tip off the creature. It was a spell of fire, born of memories. Families gathered about hearths. The smell of soot filling his nostrils, the crackle of logs aflame in his ears. Even as he felt Knott view him with disapproval, Devon was now warm, the snow flakes melting within distance of him to lessen how they obscured his vision. All the while, he tried to gaze into the bear's eyes, hoping to see what drove it on, why it heralded such cruel cold. Alone. Why it threatened the city. Red. His visions were but snippets, too little to know entirely, but he was reminded of the threat before him as a deafening roar awoke him to the moment. Faster than he realized, a heavy paw swung through the air, vicious claws severing the air his head was once in as he pulled back. The bear was unrelenting in its onslaught, another swipe coming, this time cutting through his jacket. Fabric and metal were soon encased in ice. trickles of blood soon meeting the world outside. The grazing blow was painful, but he was able to keep his footing as he reached for the wooden arrows in his quiver. Each one had tags tied to the end, paper and twine marked with ink, the imbued spells flying with the arrows as Devon loosed them. The song of each arrow head was punctuated by a 'thunk,' the roar of the bear joining in an echoing wail. Each arrow hurt, but soon vines gre… Obediently, the wooden spirit changed shape, its seedy body becoming as an arrowhead, while a single trunk grew, its tendrils intertwining until it was a mock arrow, complete with leaves where feathers would be. Shooting Knott far to the banks Devon was on his own, knowing he wasn't far enough off to loose more arrows effectively. Putting his bow aside and pulling out the machete, the bladed weapon alone offered him little protection, but he could channel magic through it as the Spirit of Cold approached. Swinging, the edge of the blade glowed deep orange, sparks flying from it as it channeled a spell. Waves of heat melted the Spirit's form, its firmness fading. It was enough where it could be as massive and intimidating as it wished. It would need to shrink down to keep its form. A smaller target, a less abstract one, but more stable, and more dangerous. With the brief window, Devon focused on putting as much energy as he could into the other fire spell he knew. A single, great ball of flame. Flashy and destructive, it was a spell many used and most realized was best used sparingly as a blinding sphere of red and orange formed in front of him, now starting to disturb the Familiar Territory and weaken him. It was only through focus that he kept it together, even as the ice beneath began to crackle, now upsetting the order of the environment recklessly. Literally too hot to handle, it flew from him, the recoil from his expulsion of spiritual energy sending Devon skidding back and away from the crumbling ice as the fireball flew up and up into the sky, piercing the clouds above. Even if it had melted the Spirit of Cold, its body would have reformed, but as it was the fireball had only created an opening for sunshine....which was all Knott needed. With the light above soon shining down, the spiritual sun invigorated the plants nearby, the leaves on Knott and the evergreens alive before that energy allowed the seedling to grow tall and broad, his form changing as … The cub wondered how, even as Devon's hand reached out, going towards the wound it had. He could see the shimmer of metal, right there, ready to be plucked. His index finger and thumb grabbed it, only to be met with a sharp bite. The pain making Devon wince as they dug deep, but it was the only language the poor thing had come to know. The least he could do was listen, even as he pulled out the lead bullet, still icy cold to the touch. "Knott, its shoulder," Devon gasped. The nature spirit of trees understood, reaching to the small bear. Soon, its wound closed, healing up, though that did only so much. Even so, the young bear had a pact with the ice spirits, though now the object that had fueled much of its pain was removed, lessening its ties to the mundane world. Pocketing the bullet, knowing he would need to cleanse it of any lingering influence later, Devon looked at the bear cub, now in less agony, but still wounded. It looked back at him, unable to trust, before it padded off and away, into the forest and to another Territory, one where the familiar would be at ease. Seeing the fog from before return as the territory was fading, Devon reached out a hand to Knott, who soon shrank down, releasing his gathered energy save for what he needed and what would heal Devon. The seedling was in his palm after, clasped by Devon as, in moments, unreality faded. The distant memory belonging to another became more and more faint. Yet, that nostalgic feeling remained deep in his bones as he realized he was now in the city park, the snow melting. The small fountain and flat grassland a far cry from the frozen lake of trees. "Guess that job's done then," Devon sighed, putting Knott's seedling in his coat pocket, the jacket still torn. As he did, he could still feel a chill from the bullet he had recovered. Even as he started to warm up, all the snow around him melting, he couldn't help but feel that the world was a cold place. Even so, that was nature, too, in its way.
