Comics, coffee vodka, and Albany ghost stories blend in "Awakened Spirits," the new comic from Albany Distilling Co.'s John Curtin and writer Ron Marz. (I've read it, and unlike most "promotional comic" projects, it's really good - esp. if you're interested in local lore.) Read all about it here:

“Awakened Spirits” comic from writer Ron Marz explores Albany’s spooky history while promoting Albany Distilling’s coffee-infused vodka.

Oh hey that's me. Fun fact: That brief clip was pretty much the only portion I read that didn't include obscenities. I got a good set of pages.
The New York State Writers Institute hosted a marathon public reading of William Kennedy's novel "Legs" on Nov. 5 at Albany Distilling Co. Kennedy joined attendees in reading portions of the 1975 novel.

Really enjoyed last night's "Legs" reading, but this was an unexpected highlight with William Kennedy and Belle-Skinner.

“He had no conception of organic friendship as opposed to transactionality,” de Blasio (the former mayor, guys) said. “ ... The only thing he could conceptionalize [sic] was political power and gaining the next office and somehow ... surpassing his father in his own mind. That was a horrible trap.”
"Yet the former governor drew a more personal — and competitive — distinction when conceding the race: He received a slightly higher share of the vote than his father’s failed mayoral bid 48 years ago." -- www.politico.com/news/2025/11...
He tried to come back from exile. Now Andrew Cuomo’s career is over for good.
The former governor’s half-century in New York politics hits a screeching halt with a failed comeback bid.

William Kennedy reads from “Legs” at the NYS Writers Institute’s daylong community reading — which is running late, thus allowing time for good literary fellowship.

I'll read an excerpt from William Kennedy's "Legs" as part of this public event a little after 6pm tonight. Come join me (and fellow readers incl. @caseyseiler.bsky.social & @ronmarz.bsky.social ) at Albany Distilling Co. (Donations to the local food pantry are being collected on location.)

I love editing/proofing our weekly arts event listings. Why? Metal show lineups like this: "Dysentery, w/ special guests Groaning Retch, Blood Starved Beast, Invoke Thy Wrath, Windchimes."

(I know nothing about Windchimes, but w/ a name like that in a lineup like that, they must be metal AF.)

"At the heart of Wicked’s enduring legacy is its chilling, cyclical relevancy. It’s a tale of outsiders, totalitarian control and propaganda as much as it is a tale of female friendship," writes @katkiessl.bsky.social in her review of the stage show (at Proctors Theatre through 11/9).

Review: 'Wicked' brings Ozian spectacle to Proctors
Soaring leads, chilling relevancy and sheer spectacle bolster the flaws of the pop culture musical behemoth, running through Nov. 9 at Proctors.

This story is fascinating and all, but I really just love the classic "academic in the midst of discussing their research with their feet up on a messy desk against a backdrop of a chalkboard filled with indecipherable calculations" photo.

OTD 1977 Carl Woese appeared on the front page of the NYT in a story about the discovery of a "form of life that predates higher organisms" a 3rd domain of life.

Here is a perspective on this groundbreaking discovery of the Archaea, made with George Fox.
