Today is Bosnia & Herzegovina Statehood Day. It is also 30 years since the Dayton Agreement which ended the horrific 1990s war there. It all makes it even more important that we uphold the integrity of Bosnia & Herzegovina with a future rooted in democracy and equal rights.

Sad news that Randal Brew has died. A former Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Randal also served many years as a councillor in Longbridge and Northfield. We were on different sides of the political fence but we were friends and I will always respect his lifetime of public service. RIP

As usual I was at Austin Branch Riyal British Legion #RemembranceDay in Northfield yesterday. The service powerfully emphasised peace, reconciliation and rejecting the perpetuation of hate. Not from the service itself but these two images still illustrate its message for me

Real elation that every living Israeli hostage is now free. Even one still held would have continued the nightmare. The nightmare carries on for many Palestinians Israel has abducted. I wrote about Dr Husam Abu Safiya in February. Why is he still in captivity? richardburden.com/2025/02/when...
When captivity is the price of courage | Richard Burden
Last month, I wrote about the haunting photo of Dr Hussam Abu Safiya standing alone and unarmed in front of advancing Israeli tanks amid ruins around his hospital in Gaza. I called the post “What cour...

Remembering all those killed and those taken hostage in southern Israel two years ago today. Thoughts with those who lost loved ones and solidarity with the families of those still held in captivity.
This by @JeremyBenAmi, who lost friends that day, is very powerful. #October7

A Manchester synagogue attacked. Then a Sussex mosque. Neither outrage has any place in our country. @srebrenicauk.bsky.social stands in solidarity with both communities. We must unite against antisemitism, Islamophobia and all hate. #RememberYesterdayActToday

Trump’s Gaza peace plan is just a few days old. As the world awaits a response from Hamas, having declared in Washington that he accepts the plan, back in Israel Netanyahu has already said he won’t carry out key parts of it. This thread from @doyiec makes important points
The Trump comprehesive plan for Gaza is anything but. It is not comprehensive, but dangerously vague. It is not a plan - but a series of points. It is not for Gaza or Palestinians but for Netanyahu. 1/

The moment the Palestinian flag was raised over the newly recognised London Embassy of the State of Palestine. A moving moment. Recognition must be the beginning. Governments must now act to stop genocide, end occupation & build peace with justice for all Palestinians & Israelis

Union Jacks and St George’s crosses are going up on lampposts across the UK. The Daily Mail called those behind it an “army of patriots.”

But the truth is very different.
