I’m baaack! Hi everyone.

I was just forwarded communications from Duke admins that this is true: one of the largest and most active herbaria in the United States is being closed in the middle of an extinction crisis, because Duke leadership does not wish to support the infrastructure costs.

I want to write a dissertation on all the current Elmo and mental health discourse. It sounds like more fun than my dissertation…though to be fair, most things do these days!

My brain: can’t figure out the final 150 words of the program notes I’ve been trying to write for two days.

Also my brain: instead thinks up solutions for 3 other forthcoming projects that are not due for monte/a year.

*Cries in the key of I’ve basically spent the last five years paying my employer to let me work for them.*

There’s a polar vortex, my heating is broken, I’m fighting asthma attacks and migraines, and I need to finish editing and formatting a book chapter that I’m late on and feeling very guilty about. And after that read 200 pages of ethnography by 11 tomorrow.

Why are all the jobs in states I, a gay, cannot move to without fearing for my safety on a daily basis?

Thank you to everyone who came to the CRIE panel this morning! It was an honour and a joy to share stories and truths with you all, and to learn so much from my fellow panelists and members of the audience.

As I pack to depart for AMS tomorrow, I'm reminded of one of my favourite unscholarly memories: an influential senior woman scholar (who shall not be named) met me, looked at my outfit, turned to her friend, and said "don't you just love how the young people have FINALLY brought fashion to the AMS?"
