Smart enough to know he's not smart enough.

Wow, I'd not used Google Home (the app) in a long, long time (Home Assistant Fan Boy right here 👋) - but wowwee. It's a total mess. It's a wall of devices, no search (I *can* use AI for it to reply saying it's confused), visual differentiation between device domains is zero, and sluggish too. Yikes.

I've accidentally changed the resolution, or font size or…something on my desktop macos, and I can't for the life of me remember what was right (without the rendering being blurry).

Gah! Everything is so small 😭

Successfully cut our ethernet cable in half and reattached ethernet ports and it still works somehow.

Because I usually fuck these things up!

(The plan is to splice in a network switch which so far seems to be working)

Not enjoying that Gmail mixes svg icons (great) with png icons (blurry) - and it's the same damn icon 🤦

Started reading Rivers of London based on recommendations, but from the start I could hear the narrator as Millie Bobby Brown, and given that the only woman in the story so far has been described as an object of desire, I'm going to ignore that Millie is now called "Peter".

Oh no, just stumbled across a photo from July 2010 where I'm standing in front of a carefully stacked pile of Introducing HTML5 books hiding my modesty whilst I stand butt naked with a "cheeky" pose.

I remember with fondness making business cards with that on one side, and the other "Can't unsee" 😂

Throw back Tuesday (…that's not it, is it?). 20 years ago in August I published this and watched it climb the "top" stories (back when I cared).

I remember being in our old flat, and being on the IRC with Resig and few others and feeling part of an exciting budding jQuery community.

Here's my (quite long) post about what happened to JS Bin last week. It's more anecdotal than technical (though there's some useful tips in there, certainly for Future Me): remysharp.com/2026/02/02/j...
JS Bin down in 2026
JS Bin went down on Jan 27th, for several days. A lot went wrong. Come along and read all about it 📰!

Finished the 3,410 word blog post about jsbin being down.

I'm super sure you're all going to read every stupid word I wrote.

Publishing tomorrow. It starts with:

"I was asked: what went wrong?

Fucking, everything."

I've been slowly restoring access to our old iPhoto collection from 2001 to 2018 (600GB - only up to 2006 so far), but good lord, skimming over old photos of me in my mid/late-20s is horrifying. WHY IS MY FACE ALWAYS LIKE THAT?!

For years I've been paying a Google business subscription for 2 people (by years, I mean over a decade) - and it turns out we had 4TB of storage (not using) and full "pro" Gemini, also not using. Cripes I'm good at leaking money like the Titanic.

I didn't see it creeping up in price to £28 month 🤦

@markboulton.co.uk (not sure Brian's here or not) - I have someone on github ask what the licence is for the font that was generated for the WWW30 project - I wasn't actually sure… github.com/remy/nexus/i...

I bought two 8TB HDD (two downsides: the sounds - like a gurgling tap and the power consumption, didn't realise - so using scheduled shutdown), but in RAID 1 - I'm now paranoid that it's not enough storage! I've got 700gb of "old photos" and a google takeout of 600gb *zipped* takeout…

It was TLS 1.3 that was the final hurdle. Cripes that was hard to spot.

jsbin survives another day.

I have accidentally done a Dry January (which…written down reads as something else entirely). Anyway, it was by accident. I don't really prescribe to mass group things like this, but I'm just slack and forgot to drink.

After the jsbin debacle, I'm very much looking forward to breaking it next week.

Apple is real quick to remove tracking apps warning people ICE is around but still hasn’t removed CSAM app X. Just in case you need more evidence that Big Tech fully supports this regime.

jsbin: I might actually be out of the woods. It's nearly midnight and I'm getting increasingly older by the second.

I'm worried I'm celebrating too early, but I think sensible thing to do is get rest, check in the morning. If successful: write it up.

My blog's traffic. I find it *really* hard to believe this is real traffic and not either: a service that's gone utterly wrong, or mass scraping of content.

And then (in white) jsbin's network traffic - explains the firefighting battle I'm losing.

Explanations in the alt text.

If anyone is wondering about jsbin, here's the current status: github.com/jsbin/jsbin/...

Reading a very brief headline about Sex Matters, and how they're against "trans ideology", a term, for what I can gather, is used almost exclusively by anti-trans entities (also know as "fucking ugly human beings, right down to their core").

I'm always lost for words with these evil fucks.

Anyone here using immich (for an alternative to Google photos)?

I'm trying to get suggestions for the machine and in particular, the type of drives, to run it on. I've got at least 1.5TB of images (plus would need a backup strategy)
