#20SongsByYear in my opinion one of the strongest years for lps being released, so i’ll focus on some great album tracks in an attempt to convince the “don’t knows”!

20. Star Spangled Banner - Jimi Hendrix (1969)

a version exists that he recorded in the studio, but that is pretty limp-wristed compared to this all out assault performed at Woodstock. just as relevant now as it was 57 years ago - ridiculous really

i have read so many articles on punk that it’s almost become as boring as the music the movement set out to destroy. thanks to @jonsavage.bsky.social in the latest edition Mojo to frame it around very specific incidents, supported by photos i’ve never seen before. consider my enthusiasm rekindled!

20. Never Never - The Assembly (1983)

before Vince Clarke settled down to a long marriage in Erasure, he had flings with Depeche Mode and Yazoo. he also had a one night stand with Feargal Sharkey and Eric Radcliffe that gave birth to this beautiful song

a SoundCloud account has been created to host my pleasingly amateurish music; when i feel brave enough / less self conscious i will be uploading some of my efforts for your entertainment. pic was taken 5 minutes ago: note how i’m smiling because i’ve yet to listen back to my wayward vocals…

19. Morgenspaziergang - Kraftwerk (1974)

a pretty riff wrapped up in shades of the Orient with a hint of English folk. interestingly what it doesn’t sound much like is a German band reinventing music to soundtrack the future

19. Shoplifters Of The World Unite - The Smiths (1987)

i remember this one well. my “eureka moment”, the straw that broke the camel’s back, etc. the song that finally made me “get” The Smiths after 4 years of resisting. shame they split later that year!

18. Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys (1966)

there is a delicious irony that the title track to a masterpiece lp full of innocence and yearning happens to be an instrumental track that wouldn’t seem out of place on a 60s tv spy series. beautifully played

18. I Second That Emotion - Japan (1982)

i’m not the biggest Japan fan in the world; Tin Drum is a fantastic lp, but their very early stuff i find appalling. this is a pretty cool cover version though, adding their personality onto a bonafide classic

just finished watching Small Prophets, and enjoyed it rather than be enraptured by it. none of the supporting characters had anything in the way of likeability which was a pity; i simply ended up not caring whether they were in the scenes or not. i think i’m in a minority here, so i’ll get my coat!

i cannot feel too sad about the passing of Robert Duvall. he was an all time great actor, respected by his peers, honoured by the industry, and lived to the fantastic age of 95. most people would be happy with that, i know i would! #RIP
