Great article on the importance of expanding Complete Streets policies to push DOTs to consider walkability even when there is no historical context for it. www.cnu.org/publicsquare...
How could Complete Streets policies be more effective?
The Complete Streets movement has largely failed in practice, but a focus on networks and context could make it more effective.

"Communities don’t improve because someone in an office decides they should but when residents start paying attention, asking questions, and imagining something better.
A walk audit is the simplest way to begin that process."

Parents are eager for their teenage children to learn to drive so they don't have to continue to chauffeur them around but a lot of kids are nervous about getting on the road. Offering transportation choices would be a great way to solve this! www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-driver...
Parents are begging their teens to drive. Gen Z isn't ready
Driving is too scary, expensive, and exhausting for Gen Z. So they're waiting to get a license and making their parents ferry them around.

Advocates call for a cautious approach to autonomous vehicles in New York
In her budget proposal for the next fiscal year, Gov. Kathy Hochul included language that would clear the way for autonomous vehicles outside of New York City.

We agree creating separated space for cyclists off of the roadway is a superior solution. We can all see that Monroe Ave properties have so much parking all the way up to the sidewalk, why can't some of that be used for a bike sidepath in the future? However, that's not the project we have today.
February 2, 2026 at 6:06 PM
Stantec's design would require moving curbs & utilities for a full reconstruction, which probably won't happen for two decades. Our advocacy aims to get the best outcome within NYSDOT's smaller scope. So we're focusing on making the car lanes as narrow as possible to enhance safety for all users.
February 2, 2026 at 6:06 PM
We'd like to address this critique about the Monroe Ave project. We don't disagree there's a better outcome for cyclists, but it's not the project in front of us today. We have advocated for separated/protected bike lanes on Monroe since it was the 2021 Complete Streets design rendering winner. 🧵
How do you defend advocating for 5 foot bicycle shoulders on a road with average traffic speeds of 41mph and volumes of roughly 10,000vdp. This is is dangerous infrastructure and out of step with all bikeway design principles I have managed to locate, including those from MassDOT.
