When you’re trying to eat healthy but you live in the South, and the “healthy” protein at the Friday buffet is fried catfish.

It’s the first day of school in our county, and for the first time in 17 years, we don’t have anyone headed off to school. It feels odd.

The bookmobile used to come to our house when I was a kid. This could have been me!

As of today, I have successively raised three people into adulthood. They are all kind, steadfast, delightful people.
I signed up for babies, but apparently becoming adults is part of the deal.

I had to update my bio because my kids have graduated and I’m no longer a tennis and track mom. I’m going to need some new hobbies in the fall.

I sponsor a little girl in Uganda. For $40/month, she gets to go to school. I talked to her at Christmas. She likes bananas and Sprite. People that I personally know oversee the ministry.
There is a boy in the school who can’t get his seizure medication. I am praying for funding to be restored.

Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate in the late 4th century, complaining about Christians.

“For it is disgraceful that…the impious Galileans support not only their own poor but ours as well, all men see our people lack aid from us.”

Last line of doctor’s note for a cold: tea with honey and lemon. Oh, the joy of my mother when the doctor says the same thing she’s been saying for years.

My son asked if he could have 3-4 friends over tonight. He went to Walmart and came back with a crowd. We are currently at 9 in our impromptu party.

The focus of Advent isn’t pretending the baby is yet come so we can act surprised on Christmas. It’s time to reflect on the brokenness in this world & a reminder we’re only in the middle of the story. The babe in the manger came & is returning as king—& the govt will be on HIS shoulders. “Even so…”

Is “Christ the King” outdated, authoritarian, patriarchal theology? Nope. It’s the opposite. King Jesus undermines the authoritarian & the patriarchal. King Jesus washes his disciples’ feet & teaches us not to Lord it over others, as the Gentiles do.

In his journal on July 19, 1761, Wesley indicated that one of the remarkable features of the love feast was the freedom that women as well as men exercised in testifying to their experience of God.

Every man, yea, every woman, has liberty to speak whatever may be to the glory of God.

Being United Methodist in the south, we’re a little bit evangelical and a little bit mainline. We follow the liturgical calendar (Advent is coming!) & also I grew up with weeklong revivals that included morning and evening services with altar calls.

Being United Methodist in the south means learning from a mix of evangelicals and academics. We teach Beth Moore studies and read our Harper Collins NRSV study Bibles. One small group will study a book by Amy-Jill Levine while another is reading a book by Louie Giglio.

Being Methodist in the south, I’ve had a foot in both mainline & evangelical. I wasn’t allowed to listen to rock music growing up, but also our hymnals change lyrics from “men” to “all.” We use the lectionary and expect you to read through the Bible in a year on your own.

A niche post for evangelicals from the 90’s: Who remembers Geoff Moore and the Distance’s cover of “I Can See Clearly Now”? Every time I open this app I hear the opening line in my head: “Nothing but blue skies.”
