a fictional creature with only 2 true limbs, but with the help of proleg-like appendages on the tail & specialized skin secretions, it can grip tree branches and other substrates with ease. Cephalic arms have broadened somewhat to help with this too; in addition to their usual sensory and manipulation purposes. (somewhat inspired by tree-climbing mudskippers, I really wanted to try drawing prolegs on a “vertebrate”-type animal of a similar lifestyle)

I tried my hand at painting a fictional planet named Ona, where some of my spec evo creatures live (alt text has more introductory details)

A first glimpse of Ona. An extrasolar world veiled by dense swirling clouds and tinted blue-green by photosynthetic lifeforms— it has a familiar and inviting aura. However, closer inspection may reveal unique lineages of life that only converge with Terran lifeforms where physics and chemistry demand. The lesser axial tilt of Ona results in little to no seasonal variation. While this world’s climates are more consistent than many on Earth, they are hardly more tame. Ona has large and unforgiving ice sheets. The lack of a significant spring-winter cycle turns the northern landscape into a frozen waste, in which few plant and animal analogues can survive. Harsh desert expanses are another result of a less tilted world, pushing life that dwells here to their biological limits. These extreme climate zones reduce overall biomass, but encourage specialization among the species that do live here. However, Ona is far from truly desolate planet. A haven of bustling teal forests and coppery savannas appear to thrive toward the equator. Ona’s vast blue seas cannot be overlooked either, likely serving as home to even more enigmatic lifeforms than the land can support.

Known as “chondrozoans”, for their mostly cartilaginous body segments. They are highly adaptable and fill numerous niches, both terrestrial and aquatic.

rough ink sketches, exploring shapes and common features mostly stocky grazer or low-browser: it has wide-set lateral eyes for spotting predators, and pincer-like digits useful for tearing off leaves, branches, etc. just behind the “feeding arm” is the beak-like mouth that receives the food. small fossorial species: central feeding limb is adapted into a spear-like form to pierce small insect-like prey, which is then brought to the mouth for a crushing bite.

badger-like coloring, not a final color scheme rough sketch; shows the row-like or trident-like arrangement of limbs at each end of the animal. The central anterior limb has become more specialized as an arm or trunk to bring food to the ventral mouth. smaller, more “primitive” relatives may not show so much limb specialization and use all to walk/grip surfaces.

little alien dude concept 🤷‍♀️ I think “sphinx” may be a good name for them.

(a pretty basic design, but the “ears” at the top of the head are actually raised spiracles / respiratory lobes. also they have fleshy horizontal jaws :V)
