A heck of a chart: in every single one of the 10 major US cities that built the most housing between 2017 and 2023, rents for older, existing units fell—often by quite a bit.

Still can’t believe my favorite sports team is playing in a playoff game on 9am on New Year’s Day. I don’t even have ESPN, I’m going to have to go to a bar for this.

Just had a buffalo chicken wrap as one of my last meals in DC, a delicacy that’s very near and dear to my heart but basically impossible to get in SF.

One of the biggest drivers of high housing costs is that a small, highly motivated group of incumbent homeowners block new housing in their neighborhoods and almost no one is organized to push back.

Young people bear the brunt of that imbalance.

Be a housing fan.

One of the biggest barriers to implementing pro-housing policy is the folk wisdom that building new market rate/mixed-income housing increases rents even though study after study shows that the opposite is the case:

building more housing lowers rents
Interesting new working paper that studies chains of movers after the construction of a new apartment building in Honolulu.

Paper finds that the project resulted in the opening up other, lower cost, housing on the island, benefiting the housing market overall.
