I used to be just an artist, now I am an artist and game developer. I create videogames, tabletop roleplaying games, and tiny playable things that defy a concrete label. Also, a lot of zines. I love deep worldbuilding, fancy layouts, and artsy graphics.

The bad news is, if you don't practice, you don't get better. I come across a lot of posts online of people who want to get good at it but don't know how to progress. Some have ADHD on top of the insecurity. page 2 I guess I have 2 slices of wisdom for you guys. ONE: for anything at all you want to do often, perhaps as a living: make sure you like the DOING of it MOST. Not the blush of planning or the rush of finishing, or the applause. Just be happy with the legwork. I hope for you that this is also the thing you want to be good as. If not, it's probably a fine hobby, too. Spread 2 for the zine "Self-taught artist" page 3 TWO: be clear about what this "practicing" is. You Do learn about art making colour tables + chiaroscuro studies, painting croissants and such. You also learn doing the artwork you want to be doing (unless that is croissants, in which case, congrats). But maybe you can still find fun in doing those technical exercises, too. page 4 TRY PUSHING YOURSELF Maybe an art challenge, rather than a larger piece? Many artists do studies (so many studies) but never tackle anything larger though. Failing large hurts more than failing small though, so be prepared. I love challenges because I know any one piece's quality is not as important than what skill I get out of it. Importantly: Allow yourself to rest after pushing. Spread 3 for the zine "Self-taught artist" page 5 Should you go t art school? If the only way you learn is with outside structure, go to artschool. Self-training requires a lot of discipline. The bad news is that art school cannot teach you to love art. And unless you do, it will be hard to get any good at it, especially in comparison. There is no seceret, no grain of wisdom, no magic that makes you an artist at heart. Also remember that in some places, education is not free. Making enough as an artist to pay off student loans is difficult. To end on a high note: Nobody will ever ask if you have a degree, just skill! page 6: Dating: As in, date your work. Some corner or the backside are good. When you feel down and like you're not progressing, pull out that stuff from last year: unless something dramatic kept you from working at all, today's work will be better. Even the odd "why can't I art like this all the time?" pieces will not look quite so singular, once you remember what lead up to them.

"Closed Mondays" is a halfbreed between #TTRPG and #boardgame: Create a #dungeon and an adventure with card decks and a few dice. A #GMless game for big groups. It works for any enclosed space - the "classic dungeon".

I feel like I never do art anymore!
