I analysed the modal share of nearly 400 European cities, comparing those with a metro, only a tram, and without any rail system.

Large cities with a metro have roughly half the car share of cities served only by a tram.

How can car traffic in cities be reduced? New research by CSH's @rafaelprietocuriel.bsky.social shows that while metros are effective in reducing car traffic, a study of nearly 400 European cities finds no evidence that trams have the same effect: csh.ac.at/news/metros-...
Metros Cut Car Use In European Cities – Trams Fall Short
People drive significantly less in European cities with a metro system than in cities that only have trams or no rail-based public transport at all.

🌐 How can we address organized crime?
Last week, we hosted a #workshop, organized by @rafaelprietocuriel.bsky.social, exploring the complexity of violence – including cartels and their recruitment practices, social media dynamics, crypto crimes, and law enforcement strategies

This week, we had the honor of welcoming @sergioaguayo.bsky.social and his team from Colmex to @csh.ac.at. Throughout the week, we discussed science, violence, migration, politics and more.

This Wednesday, his column in Reforma was dedicated to complexity and violence.

Now at the criminal complexity satellite, @rafaelprietocuriel.bsky.social just gave a wonderful talk showing his progress when modeling organized crime recruitment by Mexican cartels. His results show that current Mexican and US policies are not enough to effectively reduce recruitment.

While in Vienna, CSH resident journalist Will Grimond was fascinated to learn about grätzloase--neighbourhood oasis made by and for residents to enjoy shared urban life. And he wrote a story about it for @theguardian.com (featuring @rafaelprietocuriel.bsky.social and @csh.ac.at): shorturl.at/gC6Ch
‘Why would you take away a parking place?’: the city where anyone can build an urban oasis
Grätzloasen – low-cost, urban ‘parklets’ built by volunteers – are on the rise in Vienna as sceptics are being won over by the splash of welcome greenery and boost to community spirits
