In Sonic Adventure, Knuckles encounters a gold Sonic statue in Casinopolis, which he ends up destroying for an emerald shard.
This means that instead of rushing to get the emerald, Sonic canonically spent half of the night gambling to acquire the 5,000 rings to build the statue.
