maybe a more realistic example: the recent google pac-man halloween game. all the assets are default scaled 2x and mostly look fine. but the eyes on the frog costume (2nd one) use mixels. the way they're centered and have the black & white split would be impossible if the assets were 1x scaled.

yeah "mixels" generally refers to poorly scaled pixel art where the pixels all end up different inconsistent sizes, *or* (more likely?) when a pixel art has smaller sub-pixels than the resolution the art is going for
so if i did either of these things to mario, that would be considered "mixels" lol

Remembering Looney Tunes did a similar gag with the fig leaf in "Buckaroo Bugs". I wasn't sure if that was in the original or a CN edit, but seems it was the original. I definitely got a kick out of it as a kid. lol
