This week, the ECHR turns 75. A milestone – but these are tough times for human rights.
We spoke with Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner MICHAEL O'FLAHERTY (commissionerhr.coe.int) about lasting achievements, present threats, and why not to lose hope.

13 years ago… I spoke to an Australian newspaper about why schools need policies that affirm sexual and gender diversity. As politicians target LGBT folk, it’s vital we resist the closering of our lives. We’re not “ideologies.” We’re people. And we deserve to thrive everywhere, including in schools.

Today is “Coming Out Day.” At a time of intensifying homo/transphobia, being visible as a queer or trans person is personally risky and political resistance. But no one is entitled to your identity or visibility. You do not have to justify your existence to others. Just keep living unapologetically.

Working as a legal academic and writing on LGBT rights is not an abstract intellectual exercise. It’s deeply emotional. It requires political accountability and intellectual vulnerability.
