Colour-Blindness in Mental Health Care: Improving Therapeutic Practice for BAME Patients
With the ongoing challenge of mental health decline in various societal populations, for example amongst young adults, providing adequate and tailored support for all individuals is essential. Unfortunately, for mental health care patients from ethnic minority backgrounds, accessing adequate support services persists as a challenge. Due to a neglect of culturally specific obtsacles, including experiences of racism and discrimination, ethnic minority patients often receive incompetent and ineffective therapeutic treatment. This article portrays the underlying biases within the field which prompt this notion, the consequences of overlooked racial identity, known as racial colour-blindness, and an enhanced route to treatment for individuals of ethnic minority backgrounds.
