If nothing else, a band that excelled at making songs about history feel upsettingly modern

Ashamed to admit I only got into them post-Greep solo stuff, but there really is no one out there like Black Midi - that mix of jazz, prog, post-punk and late-period macabre Tom Waits cabaret hits like nothing else

Christ, what a loss. Hard not to think of what could have been.

had a good birthday - went to a protest, played mini golf, watched Ghost in the Shell 2 for the first time and felt my reality shatter

this sticker is, by far, the funniest possible thing you can put on the cover for Some Kind of Monster

On the one hand: watching a movie is no substitute for real political action.

On the other hand: Alex Cox’s WALKER can help explain a LOT about why we are where we are today.

Goodbye to 2025. It’s been a big year…

Best movies I watched in 2025 (best year for movies watched in some time, have probably a dozen 4.5 star runner-ups)

I'll admit I wasn't huge on the lead singles, but the album cuts might be my favorite stuff I've heard from Gaga - love all the obvious 90s Bowie influences on her songwriting and production

Also gave us what is, for my money, the best mainstream pop song in years. Seriously, listen to that Nile Rodgers guitar line and tell me this SHOULDN'T have been a number one single

Obviously an upper limit on "nice things you can say about 2025", but I'll give it this - damn good year for punk and post-punk! Just a couple of my favorite albums from this year:

You could tell me that Cameron came up with Avatar while listening to prog tapes during his 70s trucker days and I’d believe it - someone please check if it syncs up with Close to the Edge/Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

-storied blockbuster filmmaker sinking their cachet into a project they’ve been chasing for decades
-loads of intricate digital VFX
-weirdo politics that veer both left and right
-incredibly horny

this has horrifyingly inserted the phrase “Avatar is dad rock Megalopolis” into my brain
All the Avatar discourse — “It has no cultural impact”, “this proves viewer taste is on the decline”, etc — constantly misses the only true point: that indeed, no one would give a shit about Avatar if a guy who wasn’t monomaniacally obsessed with putting the impossible to film wasn’t making it

my hometown Illinois movie theater is more packed than I’ve seen it in years, holy shit
