say it again:

4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities

demolishing higher education is economic sabotage
It's important to note here that we're not just talking about faculty & university staff. 100s of U.S. colleges are in towns or small cities where they form the major industry & lifeblood of the community. Loss of students -> loss of rent $, restaurant $, bars, bookstores, gaming stores...
The US could see a 30-40% decline in new international student enrollment, resulting in nearly $7 billion in lost revenue and more than 60,000 fewer American jobs. https://www.nafsa.org/fall-2025-international-student-enrollment-outlook-and-economic-impact

As we all stagger home from vacations & begin working on syllabi in earnest, I’d offer my semesterly recommendation that @wcaleb.org's generic syllabus maker can generate a list of days your class will meet—all you have to do is delete any holidays, etc. from the list wcaleb.rice.edu/syllabusmake...

A powerful piece by Patricia Okker, former President of the New College of Florida, on how reading American women writers can shape our current moment. This is what the humanities can do, and this is why they are so afraid of us. Free access from Legacy: muse.jhu.edu/article/959226

Undermining the NEH, National Archives, Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian all at once also tells us this 360 is not just about higher ed or research but about how we have (finally, slowly, imperfectly) expanded the American story.
The scope of issues confronting research and scholarship is 😱🤯 among them for publications the profusion of AI slop.

But the direct political intervention in funding and publishing research as well as in libraries and universities shows this to be a 360 crisis.
Since this was published yesterday, NPR reports JAMA joins NEJM on the list of journals that confirms they’ve been sent threatening letters by Trump’s DOJ, ominously referencing their tax-exempt status in a bid to compel regime-friendly editorial choices.

I see it. I have lived it. 83 years ago, the U.S. government turned upon a group of its own citizens and residents and sent them to internment camps without due process. I was there among them. American fascism is back. It is here. It is now.

Cory Booker: "I don't want a Disney vacation of our history! I don't a whitewashed history, I don't want a homogenized history. Tell me the wretched truth about America."

Historians, crawling back into daylight from the depths of despair: "Did somebody somewhere ask for some wretched truth?"

We join with publishers, authors, booksellers & librarians to affirm that the White House executive order recognizing only two sexes constitutes censorship and has no place in a free society.

We’ve had four consecutive years of 900+ fatalities on #Virginia roadways and what’s the Governor’s priority?

Going to the WH to single out four trans kids in our entire commonwealth who play sports with their friends.

The Governor needs to stop picking on kids and focus on fixing our roads.
