I’m so happy to see so many people I haven’t heard from or talked to in ages on here! I’ve missed the community of scholars on social media. Both lots and not much has changed for me since I was last active on scholarly social media.
New publication!

Stopped for lunch on the way to work and sat and watched a navy ship being towed to the repair docks. This was the site of docks for the domestic slave trade and enslaved workers labored in the Navy Yard across the river. The Elizabeth River is stained with the blood of black and brown folks.

You can't teach U.S. history without "divisive" narratives. Slavery wasn't "unifying." The Japanese incarceration wasn't "unifying." The anti-immigrant Operation Wetback (real name) wasn't "unifying."
It's history's job to tell the truth, not cover up past racism to pave the way for future racism.

Sure, let's do that. I'm sure that the humanities are why they're shutting down vaccines and telescopes and weather monitoring. Trump will restore all funding if Yale stops teaching history.

Worked on syllabi and managed to break Blackboard as per usual. Giving up for the day.

Just had one of those moments where you are sitting at a coffee shop and snippets of the conversation next to you filter through your concentration and you have the knee jerk reaction to tell the woman sitting there to run. #redflag

It will hurt non elite schools more than elite ones, endowments will protect the survival of the Ivies and other R1s.
That Trump II's assault on higher education hurts ALL schools, not just the "elite" ones, is all the more reason that universities and colleges should recognize the benefits of collective action and work together to push back.
This is the most important thing to read on Trump's higher ed war. It's not "Harvard vs. trade schools." It's the same ecosystem and all parts are essential. Research breakthroughs need skilled labor to manufacture/fix them. Jobs & communities are at risk. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/04/m...

say it again:

4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities

demolishing higher education is economic sabotage
It's important to note here that we're not just talking about faculty & university staff. 100s of U.S. colleges are in towns or small cities where they form the major industry & lifeblood of the community. Loss of students -> loss of rent $, restaurant $, bars, bookstores, gaming stores...
The US could see a 30-40% decline in new international student enrollment, resulting in nearly $7 billion in lost revenue and more than 60,000 fewer American jobs. https://www.nafsa.org/fall-2025-international-student-enrollment-outlook-and-economic-impact

Everytime I read another news piece on deportation, Alligator Alley or families being torn apart they ring in awful similarity to the stories I’m uncovering from the domestic slave trade. Just transcribed the record of the sale of three little boys between 5 and 12 years old. No mention of parents.

I’m spending my week at music camp and it’s a good reminder about how humbling learning new skills is. Nothing like being back in the student seat to remind you that learning is exhausting even when it is fun.

This isn’t just a bill.

It’s a fundamental restructuring of American society in which the poor are abandoned, and “immigration jails” outrank healthcare.

Billions taken from one and given to the other.
Judd Legum explains 7 of the things in Trump's megabill:
1. Cuts $930B from Medicaid
2. 16M lose health ins
3. Slashes food asst for poor families by $186B
4. Lower incomes for bottom 40% of families
5. Increases deficit by $3.3T
6. $45B for new immigration jails
7. Billions for defense contractors
7 things everyone should know about Trump's megabill
The Republican reconciliation legislation, which Trump calls his "big, beautiful bill," is massive.

My take on the NARA2 restrictions from someone who did records service at NARA1 for 6 years: the public facing staff probably heard only what the public was told at the same time or 5 minutes before the notice went up. NARA staff work very hard and deal with a lot of entitled folks every day. 1/?
