For new followers, my posts on here fall into three categories of various levels of irritating:

1) Posting pieces of my A.V. Club writing I think didn't completely suck.

2) Letting people know what I'm streaming on Friday/Saturday nights

3) INTRUSIVE THOUGHT DISPOSAL
I have played a thousand hours of JRPGs over the last 30 years, dating back to the original Dragon Warrior. The genre, and the way it handles combat, is messy; you don't fix it by trying to find ways to make battles not matter at all. www.avclub.com/dragon-quest...
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined feels kind of like dying—except not as fun
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined tries to streamline the original, but loses sight of why we play games, turning this one into a chore.

I won't have a piece about Mewgenics until next week but I've played about 25 hours of it so far and can confirm it has The Juice. The added complexity means it can't reach Binding Of Isaac levels of "I will play this forever" but when a run is cooking it feels amazing.

Love going to the vet, love getting to choose between literally emptying my bank account or living with the knowledge that I may have cheapskated my little buddy to death.

There are people in my Fallout finale review arguing that I am wrong for hating Liberty Prime, The Big Dumb Nuke-Throwing Joke Robot, and I am always at home to people suggesting I am wildly off base on any and all topics except for this very specific one where I'm right and they're all wrong.

Despite heroic performances from Kyle MacLachlan and Ella Purnell, Fallout's second season ends with a limp gesture toward the future. Our recap:

Love to sit around the house with my screenwriting Oscar, wondering how I can score forty big ones an hour by fixing spelling errors in AI-spewed text www.avclub.com/xai-writing-...

This is your last chance to lock in your Guppy Bump before we raise it to $1.50
Today is the last day to join the Duckfeed Patreon and lock in the current rates. We’re modestly increasing our prices tomorrow but we don’t want to hike anyone who’s already supporting us.

My favorite Catherine O'Hara story is that she and the guy who made the weird statues for Beetlejuice (Bo Welch) made eyes at each other during the shoot but were both too shy to make a move until Tim Burton took Welch aside and told him to just ask her out and then they were married for 34 years.

A wrote a bit about my ongoing efforts to reckon with Elden Ring Nightreign, a game whose flaws—and deliberate "Fuck you"s—I frequently bemoan. (Also: I'm streaming at 8 p.m. tonight, playing… Elden Ring Nightreign. Huh.)

There's pleasure, and merit, in returning to a game you've panned
It's good to revisit an imperfect game that you've already dismissed--like we did with Elden Ring: Nightreign and its recent DLC.

Regular stream time tonight, at 8 p.m. Pacific. We're going to take another run at the Nightreign DLC, hopefully with less incredibly horrifying and dismal results.

Look: I think some of the stuff TR-49 is doing is really cool, and it gets even better as it goes. But I definitely struggled with some of its early design choices, which feel counter to what I really enjoy about narrative deduction games. www.avclub.com/tr-49-narrat...
TR-49 is a strong—if irritating—addition to mystery gaming’s best new genre
Mystery game TR-49 complicates its great puzzles with some design decisions that are intentionally irritating.
