Today is the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen. Larkin wrote in a letter to Monica Jones on 26 August 1951, of his appreciation of the 'calm measureless world' in which Jane Austen's characters 'have their being'.

Reading 'The Concert' by Edna St Vincent Millay I get that it has a sense of kinship with Larkin's 'Broadcast'. @plsoc.bsky.social

We had a fantastic afternoon at the Brynmor Jones Library at the University of Hull for our annual event to mark Larkin's death on 2 December 1985. Thank you to @jwikeley.bsky.social for an absorbing talk about The Less Deceived followed by some lovely readings.

Harry Chambers, the publisher of Peterloo Poets, wrote this poem to mark Larkin's death as part of The Enormous Yes collection, which Chambers edited in 1986.

A fantastic tribute Anthony Thwaite.
As I travel through Japan I've been accompanied by some poems from this collection, translated and introduced by former @plsoc.bsky.social President Anthony Thwaite. A highly recommended read.

Thank you for sharing these. Larkin does indeed seem to permeate our thoughts and ideas.
@plsoc.bsky.social Came across two references to Philip in as many days. In 'Notes from Walnut Tree Farm' Roger Deakin asks 'Is Larkin any good?'. In 'Stour Seasons' Ronald Blythe revels in the atmosphere of old churches and PL's "marvellous words". Like Hull trains, there'll be another soon surely.

Tom Stoppard, who died on the 29th November, was a Founding Honorary Vice President of the Philip Larkin Society from 1989 and was a great admirer of Larkin's poetry.
