Hey new followers. I’m an Environmental Geologist who became Mayor of a really cool city. Historic (by Canadian west coast standards), young & diverse (in demographics), dense, transit-oriented, compassionate, and punching above our weight on climate, housing, & reconciliation. It’s called #NewWest
Last Friday, I attended a meeting convened by @visionzerovancouver.ca with regional elected folk, transportation & public health professionals to talk about inter-agency collaboration on the ending of road deaths and serious injury. It helped solidify for me the value of the #NewWest VZ approach.

We’ve now taken the lead by 91 votes! 🤯 This thing is certainly not over! Over 1,000 ballots have been challenged, so if you haven’t tracked your ballot yet get on it! Our trusty volunteers have been working hard to "cure" ballots so they count! We're so close!

Bruce Harrell can still lose the Seattle mayoral race if late ballots break significantly for Katie Wilson - NPI's Cascadia Advocate
Those who aren't steeped in Emerald City politics might look at the initial results for Mayor of Seattle and conclude the incumbent has won reelection. But the challenger can still win with a late bal...

The saddest part of Dick Cheney’s death is that it happened so long after his specific brand of hubris caused hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths that most have forgotten this legacy, and no longer have the energy to dance on his grave.

There’s a sort of Dunning-Kruger effect happening where people who read widely, consider various perspectives, and put in effort to understand views they disagree with worry that they don’t do that enough, while people who don’t do any of that accuse others of being in a bubble and call it a day.

This, and the fact the entire storyline is launched by regional transportation planners failing to properly engage with an impacted neighbourhood over some alleged “get traffic moving” scheme, make the HHGG as relevant now as ever.
I've been getting back into the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series after many years, and the most relatable part is how everyday objects like doors and elevators have been imbued with artificial intelligence and it just makes them obnoxious and frustrating to use and everyone hates it.

Anyway: thought I would give you a view into the less glamorous aspects of local government. People care about parking. Way too much. We spend a lot of time explaining city policy, reassuring people that the sky is not falling, and absorbing anger from people who are still not happy. It’s the job.

Talking about making roads safer with Simi Sara!
Speed and Intersection cameras are not a "scam", and it is unfortunate that media chooses this framing when proven lifesaving measures, at worst, marginally inconvenience dangerous drivers.

In @translink.ca budget discussions, and frankly we don’t talk enough about how Metro Vancouver is the 25th largest metro area in Canada/USA, but has the 3rd highest transit ridership. This is a massive success we sometimes take for granted.

Populism kills. And the worst part is it often isn't even popular.
No, check that, killing people is the actual worst part.

"Ford has been vocal in his opposition to speed cameras, calling them a “cash grab” only meant to generate revenue for municipalities, but the communities themselves, as well as parents, police chiefs and researchers at the Hospital for Sick Children have said they save lives and should stay." #ASE

I'm excited about this work: a principled & policy-driven approach to safety in #NewWest. I'm not interested in Vision Zero as just a marketing campaign for work we're already doing, I'm interested in driving a culture change around road safety in City Hall & in community. tinyurl.com/yy5z5csy
