Today, the UK government announced a proposal to change copyright law - for the benefit of AI companies - that would cause huge, irreversible harm to creators.

More info below, but most importantly here's what you can do (wherever you live):

Maybe one of the reasons there are so many unhinged academics is that in order to keep your job, you’re constantly required to tout yourself as a Scholar of World-Historical Significance, even as your office’s ceiling tiles slowly dislodge themselves to fall on your head.

These findings are unsurprising. Much focus is rightly placed on student wellbeing - I see regular announcements about it - but little care or attn to faculty. We are often treated as a renewable resource, lucky to have jobs, and as though we have unlimited hours to care for everyone but ourselves.
"More than half of respondents said that over the past year, their job took a negative toll on their mental or emotional health. Nearly 6 in 10 said they felt 🔥 out bc of their work. Half said they needed help for emotional or mental-health problems... over the previous year."
Faculty and Staff Are Feeling Anxious, Depressed, and Burnt Out, Study Says
Students’ emotional and mental distress are taking a toll on professors’ health. Administrators should take action, the authors urge.

A great example of how no one can find actual uses for LLMs that aren't scams for grifts. Quite literally the LAST thing publishing needs is MORE manuscripts, especially low quality and unedited AI regurgitations. This isn't a problem being solved.
