It's pretty wild to me that investigators have uncovered that anti-trans campaigns are largely funded by the fossil fuel industry, and that the presumed motivations are pretty directly to redirect the public conversation away from climate change... and that this isn't bigger news.

‘Big Tech’s A.I. Data Centers Are Driving Up Electricity Bills for Everyone’

But the tech industry’s all-out artificial intelligence push is fueling soaring demand for electricity to run data centers that dot the landscape in Virginia, Ohio and other states. Large, rectangular buildings packed with servers consumed more than 4 percent of the nation’s electricity in 2023, and government analysts estimate that will increase to as much as 12 percent in just three years. That’s partly because computers training and running A.I. systems consume far more energy than machines that stream Netflix or TikTok. A June analysis, from Carnegie Mellon University and North Carolina State University, found that electricity bills are on track to rise an average of 8 percent nationwide by 2030 and as much as 25 percent in places like Virginia because of data centers. In some places, it is happening already. Starting in June, the electricity bill for a typical household in Ohio increased at least $15 a month because of data centers, according to data from a major local utility and an independent monitor of the electric grid that stretches across 13 states and the District of Columbia.

Tolkien's Middle-earth, as the company aims to make more of the franchise. With The Hunt for Gollum, we’ll get to see what Gollum was up to in the years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

A post on r/WritingWithAI from yesterday with 11 upvotes and 37 comments. Al has made my writing worse? I have a middlingly successful pen name in a romance niche, and the whole point of using Al was to speed through the commercial work so I could save my real creative energy for the big personal projects I actually care about. But it's taking longer to get a decent book with Al than it would to just write it myself from scratch. The constant editing loop is destroying my writing process. Instead of drafting then editing like every writing guide tells you, I'm trapped in endless tweaking of Al-generated text that isn't even good. I'm spending so much time wrestling with this stuff, editing and re-editing and trying to make it not sound terrible, that by the time I'm done with the commercial stuff I have nothing left for my passion projects. This isn't about the ethics of Al, just the functionality. I feel trapped. The commercial work was supposed to be the income that would buy me time and mental space for the writing that matters to me. Instead, I'm pouring all my energy into fixing bad Al prose while my literary work sits there, untouched. In the end, the commerical work does sell, but when I look at how many hours it takes to get a decent draft I feel like I would be better off drafting manually. The thing that was supposed to free up my creative bandwidth is completely draining it instead. Does anyone know of a tool that gives you like 50-100 words when you're stuck? Not full scenes or chapters that change your voice - just enough to get unstuck and keep your momentum going. Everything I've tried either generates way too much or completely derails what I'm writing. Is anyone else dealing with this? Where you thought Al would handle the "grunt work" but it's actually consuming more of your creative resources than doing it the old way? I'm starting to wonder if I should abandon Al entirely and go back to pure manual drafting.

There have been people less than helpful in my journey here. I wanted to acknowledge those too, bc I know I am not unique in this experience. No thank you to the physics study assoc that made me sing songs about how women couldn't study physics without sleeping with the professor, the day I stepped into university life. No thank you to the 5th year physics student that decided to assign me a stripper name within the first minute of meeting me in the physics coffee corner in my first year. No thank you to the technician that was responsible for onboarding me on the use of the cluster in my third year who raised his eyebrows and asked me if that meant I was some sort of computer girl. No thank you to the senior researcher that sent me utterly inappropriate texts after a conference, then proceeded to apologise months later by telling me they had not been meant for me anyway so no hard feelings remain hopefully And no thank you to him for attending every conference I've been to since. No thank you to the people who told me that it was surprising that I was doing a PhD since I was a girl. No thank you to the man who mistook me for a coffee lady at a conference, and after having to correct him two times that I did not work there, responded with you should consider it. No thank you to the researcher that asked me what I was wearing underneath my outfit during a conference. No thank you to the physicist who declared to a room full of other physicists that biologists don't know how to design an experiment. No thank you to the people who have called me scary instead of strong and intimidating instead of intelligent. And finally, no thank you to the exec board of the TU Delft, whose knee-jerk reaction to being held up a mirror about the social safety at the university, was to sue the party holding up the mirror instead of looking at the problems they highlighted. ... You have made me feel like I do not belong in science & I cannot forgive you for that.
