Took a bike ride in Sioux Falls to visit my friend David.

An Iowa State student, Ray “Bubba” Sorensen, got so jacked up watching Saving Private Ryan in 1999 he embarked on painting a “Freedom Rock” in each of Iowa’s 99 counties, plus other states, to salute vets. Here’s Montgomery County’s freedom rock. Well, turn it up, man. www.thefreedomrock.com
Freedom Rock in Fountain Square Park, the town square of Red Oak, Iowa Marker for the Freedom Rock in Red Oak, Iowa. It reads: Montgomery County Freedom Rock The Montgomery County Freedom Rock is located in historic Fountain Square Park in downtown Red Oak. The Rock came from a farm field in northern Montgomery County and was donated by the Gary Jipsen family. It was placed in the northeast corner of the park. New sidewalks and concrete for the flags were constructed by Echternach Construction crew with concrete donated by the Concrete Company and Echternach Construction. Landscaping rock was donated by Hy-Vee. Service flags and poles were donated by the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Court of Honor. Fund raising was a joint effort of the Court of Honor, American Legion Post 67 and VFW Post 2265 all from Red Oak. The Freedom Rock is the work of artist, Ray "Bubba" Sorensen. Each Freedom Rock is unique to the county where it is placed. Montgomery County lost more soldiers per capita than any other county in the nation during WWII. Because of that fact, the Navy named a Victory Ship after Red Oak. The Red Oak Victory Ship is located on the west side of the Rock. Company F, Villisca and Company M, Red Oak both members of the 1-168th Infantry Battalion, 34th Infantry Division mobilized for WWII. A Red Bull soldier is represented on the south face of the rock. The north side of the rock shows the farm fields they left from and the train and depot that carried them so far from home.

That's how I felt running across the parking lot after taking this picture.

Immediately after taking this photo, I grabbed the duck by the beak and made a mad dash to my car, Philip bouncing against my thigh. I am absolutely certain I looked ridiculous, and it is one of my most favorite memories.

Happy National Thrift Store Day!

Coco Shack in Chadron considers itself an antique store, but the back room had a thrift store vibe. Visited as part of the Nebraska Passport program.

Made some new friends this weekend.

The shuttle driver also has a duck named Philip! Except his quacks more and hangs out with chickens.
