Diets evolve faster than we think. In the UK, a long-running survey has tracked what families buy each week since 1940. The latest results reveal massive shifts in just three generations — and debunk the idea that our diets are purely cultural and unchangeable.

Remembering my old maths tutor Peter Neumann. He was a real eccentric genius. Loved maths. Used to write his name as πeter and insist that the college records use πN as his initials. He did his undergrad degree at Queen's College Oxford and stayed there the rest of his life. #MathSky

"Ray, when somebody asks you 'Would you like to do a genetic analysis of a sample of Hitler's blood for a TV show' you say NO!"

I've been dubious of the predictive ability of some genetic research, but "this sample of Hitler's blood suggests there is a strong chance he never had normal sexual relations with a woman" is something else entirely

Reminder that 1) we need to cut fossil fuel emissions immediately and sharply and 2) even if fossil emissions were eliminated immediately, food system emissions could still prevent the world from keeping warming below 1.5-2C. So big changes to food production and consumption are also necessary.
Global food system emissions could preclude achieving the 1.5° and 2°C climate change targets
Concerted efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from food production are necessary to limit increases in global temperature.

This was all kicked off by Bill Gates's nonsense earlier this week.

As if adaptation - moving entire populations, transitioning natural and food systems, upgrading public services and infrastructure, changing our financial system and dealing with huge economic costs - is some sort of easier route.

We're told that being in the Royal Family isn't a luxury, it's a life of service and intrusion that the family must endure. Yet we're also told that removing Andrew from the Royal Family is a terrible punishment. So which is it?
