Began the topside camo with a ton of chipping using liquid mask based on a wartime photo. Also installed the engines. You don’t have to paint a whole plane at once.

#histscalemodels #scalemodels Didn’t realize that the front cowlings on these planes with Bristol engines was actually the exhaust collector. Pretty clever. Replicating it was a fun challenge. Also most of the way through painting the underside.

#histscalemodels #scalemodels Okay, this Tamiya Beaufighter isn’t the most detailed or scale thing but the worst “feature” in modeling is a clear canopy hatch with thick clear plastic and a huge ledge that can’t easily be hidden. About a quarter of the build time so far has been fixing the canopy!

#histcsalemodels #scalemodels One of the easiest and most effective techniques to make engines and guns look realistic is to rub a pencil on coarse sandpaper to get the graphite, then use your finger or a coarse brush to rub it into matte black paint. The first photo is before, the second is after.

#histscalemodels #scalemodels 10 hours in and I’m already to this point on the Tamiya 1/48 Beaufighter. Tamiya was genius for making the delicate parts (like landing gear) as a module that goes in later so I can handle this easily to do bodywork. Very little filler. It’s fun to rip through a model!

#histscalemodels #scalemodels As a pilot, a modeler and a history buff, there are a lot of modeling techniques that bug me because they are simply wrong. One of the biggest is putting gun streaks on the top of the wing. That’s where the low pressure is so no gun soot can possibly stick there.

It was going so well until I broke every part of the tail in the jig while putting the wings on. Later, I broke the tail skid off while rigging it. Spent a full day passably fixing it but it’ll never go down as a great finished model when it’s done. #histscalemodels #scalemodels
