Senator Cory Booker has now beaten Ted Cruz' record for a speech on the Senate floor (21 hours and 19 minutes) in 2013.

Way to go, Cory!!!!!!

Next up: Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon who lasted 22 hours and 26 minutes in 1953.

And only 3 hours to beat Strom Thurman's all-time record!

Keep going!

Looking forward to speaking tomorrow at the Clio seminar in Milan, on 'Visualising Athenian Democracy'. I'll be thinking about how historians and political theorists need to grapple with the iconography of democratic Athens, & arguing that it's worth exploring the gap between reality and imaginary.

Oligarchies only work in favour of a few privileged individuals or families. Where I see oligarchic government I see corruption. I see nepotism . I see inequality and lack of opportunity. Oligarchy doesn’t end well.

We will not be distracted.
We will not be discouraged.
We’ve got our eyes on the prize.

And we will build the prosperous, free nation for all that we deserve.

The time to organize is now.

Very much enjoyed talking to @polphilpod.bsky.social about Plato’s figure of the tyrant in the Republic. Plato like all ancient Athenians worried endlessly about how democracy slides into tyranny & his psychological account of tyranny is deeply insightful.

I didn’t create democracy in order for it to be so easily dismantled. It’s meant to be strong, resilient and respected. In my day Trump would have been ostracised. About 10 years ago in fact. When you see an enemy approaching you don’t react, you plan, you seek out allies. You anticipate.
