Thrilled and honored that my book Religion for Realists was given the 2025 Distinguished Book Award by @sssreligion.bsky.social last night.
It’s vital that we understand religion and religious people. The social sciences are remiss to ignore either.
Hire more religion specialists.

Worth a read. All of the rhetoric up to now has been designed to confuse and distract. To create an inflated sense of crisis and shock, to upset people so that they can't keep their eye on the ball. The ball here being actual authoritarian crackdown. It's here.
Donald Trump demanded the arrest of Chicago’s mayor and the governor of Illinois. @jonlemire.bsky.social on why Trump’s threats are no longer bluster:
Retribution Is Here

What a great research experience with two incredible young scholars of American religion. So excited the research is finally in print for the world to see!
@proflauragil.bsky.social, @pennye.bsky.social + I spent 18 months observing MN churches as they rebounded from COVID + the 2020 racial justice protests. We identify 3 approaches leaders used to shore up member loyalty + comply with external directives: Introspection, Avoidance + Mobilization.

Agree, it's a magical movie.
Heartbroken about the death of Robert Redford today. More than his work as an actor, I admired his work as a director and producer. My all-time favorite movie is Milagro Beanfield War, which he directed, and which is just magical. Or milagro, even.

District and appellate courts, I think fairly, keep asking the Supreme Court to clarify what they actually mean—i.e. "If the new rule is that the Trump admin can never lose then you have to say that" and the Supreme Court keeps being like "No, you're supposed to just do it without us having to say."

History will remember these consultants, and the Democratic Party leaders who listened to them, as collaborators.
And not in a good "let's collaborate on a creative project" way.

Despite what some political consultants advise, anti-Trump candidates can’t just focus on the economy. They need to put preserving democracy front and center.

Great panel, featuring Lena Kunjan of @umnsociology.bsky.social
Fantastic panel on religion & politics at #ASA2025. New findings pushing the field forward:
- how political activism brings some people back to religion
- how people use similar cultural schema to talk about spirituality & politics
- racialized patterns in Christian nationalism & patriotism
