Breaking: Helsinki, Finland, has just recorded its lowest sea level on record, as a cold easterly flow and strong high pressure have pushed water out of the Baltic Sea.

The observed minimum this morning was −93.5 cm below normal.

The Helsinki tide gauge record goes back to 1904.

All Finnish icebreakers are busy assisting maritime traffic, and the #seaice on the #BalticSea continues to expand. If the Bothnian Sea becomes fully ice-covered this winter, it would be the first time since February 2011.

Drawing ice charts is fun, sometimes the ice polygons take some nice shapes, like this cute Ice Fox sitting on the Oulu fairway on today's #BalticSea #icechart.🦊😍

Such an obvious bi-annual event, but still sooo cool! =)
Happy Equinox!

This winter's daily Baltic Sea #icechart :ing, done jointly by the Finnish and Swedish ice services, started today. The freeze-up is well under way in the Bay of Bothnia and the #icebreaking operation will quite likely start within a few weeks.

The long-awaited #Sentinel-1C satellite 🛰️ is now in orbit! So excited to pipeline its data to our sea-ice monitoring and the #BalticSea #icebreaking as soon as possible. www.esa.int/Newsroom/Pre...

Get your popcorn 🍿 ready. In Kemi the previous all-time low was recorded in 2016, back then reaching -128 below mean water reference.
Sea level will drop dramatically at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia due to persistent and strong northeasterly winds.

The forecast for Kemi shows -141 cm, which would set a new all-time record low if confirmed.
