I have to wonder if our superannuation system is underdiscussed as a reason the far right struggles to get traction in Australia
like, there's less of a natural constituency of "socially conservative pensioners who maybe mistrust the traditional party of the centre-right to hand them their cheques"
The current French parliament in meme form.

wow liberalism is regrettably rare
Polling on Lucy Connolly tweet following her release finds that 35% think her sentence too harsh, but the majority of Brits: 52% say it was about right or too lenient. Most 2024 Reform voters say too harsh, Tory voters split harsh or lenient/about right. Most Labour/LD/Green the latter

Amazing new age verification procedure requires no government ID, no credit card numbers, no photography

import { setTimeout } from 'node:timers/promises'

const verifyAge = async () => {
await setTimeout(568_036_800_000)
return true
}

fwiw I am pretty happy to call the plan "flatten gaza and evict everyone living there" genocide or ethic cleansing or whatever, its a pretty central example of the thing. like regimes did this all the time during the Age Of Nationalism and there's a reason we don't do this anymore.

What did you call those black rubber-soled canvas trainers from primary school PE classes?

Plimsolls: 53% of Britons
Pumps: 23%
Gym shoes: 6%
Daps / dappers: 5%
Sandshoes / sannies: 5%
Gutties: 1%
Rubbers: 1%

im skeptical tariffs were ever a net positive issue for trump
im sure "voters who have ever read an economics textbook" outnumber "auto and steel workers in the midwest"
The new producer price index (PPI) data this morning shows inflation rising again. It’s a good time to remember that Trump’s approval on tariffs is underwater in **40** states. Tariffs are potentially his biggest political liability www.gelliottmorris.com/p/trump-is-u...

it feels like the consensus among UK journalists over the past 5 or so years is that it's acceptable to cherrypick crimes committed by *trans* people but to do that to *brown* people is beyond the pale
and people are acting :shocked_pikachu: that this consensus has broken down for some reason?
a side note: rather surprisingly, the UK's recurrent panics about knives have *not* been strongly racially coded. this is surprising because the UK media has often been extremely racist! But contrast to others, where knife panics have been weakly (US) and strongly (China) racial.

I think the issue is politicians are trained to talk to the media in a way that is no longer helpful
July 30, 2025 at 2:59 PM
like i feel like you can argue that in principle states are allowed to have an interest in who crosses borders without it devolving into "randomly chucking anyone who looks vaguely brown into federal prison without legal counsel"

Every American should read this ACLU lawsuit about what is happening in Los Angeles and California. It is the stuff of dystopian nightmares. This is not immigration enforcement. It is positively stuffed with videos and articles documenting racial profiling on a scale unseen since Jim Crow.

notable: they claim they developed in parallel and that most of their experiments were performed *prior to* the release of R1 and they came to the same conclusions
