a side note: rather surprisingly, the UK's recurrent panics about knives have *not* been strongly racially coded. this is surprising because the UK media has often been extremely racist! But contrast to others, where knife panics have been weakly (US) and strongly (China) racial.

I think the issue is politicians are trained to talk to the media in a way that is no longer helpful
like i feel like you can argue that in principle states are allowed to have an interest in who crosses borders without it devolving into "randomly chucking anyone who looks vaguely brown into federal prison without legal counsel"
