The cv, the dark cv, and the hallucinated cv.

Academia is on its way from announcing the work done, the failures on the way while getting work done, to listing up work that AI invented and no one has ever done.

Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

Terrifying. I predict in the AI era, the tech elites will send their children to liberal arts colleges to actually think and the rest will go to places that don’t care and the powerful will continue to rule the world but in even scarier ways. #AI www.currentaffairs.org/news/ai-is-d...
AI is Destroying the University and Learning Itself
Students use AI to write papers, professors use AI to grade them, degrees become meaningless, and tech companies make fortunes. Welcome to the death of higher education.

This era shows why the academic work on settler societies (USA; Australia; South Africa), is so relevant to understanding the US today. We can have an inclusive democracy but it has a through-line of hatred & violence in defence of white masculine entitlement which is easy to activate at any point.

I know I probably sound like a deranged crank at this point, but it has seemed so obvious that we’re going to see infinitely more of this & related threats to funding over *this academic year* if we don’t collectively start rejecting these fascist tactics out of hand.
A professor at Texas A&M taught… something related to gender that offended a student, who secretly filmed herself objecting. That video is picked up by TX legislators, who demand her firing, and now the dean and dept head have been fired.

A&M Dean removed following student complaints over curriculum
The Department of Justice has also acknowledged the situation and said it would be investigating.

About this Florida vaccine story:

When they were little - 1 yr and 3 1/2 - my two older boys, who’d had all their shots, got whooping cough.

We asked their pediatrician what would’ve happened if they hadn’t been vaccinated.

“Oh, they’d have died.”
