It's wild to me that believing it's absolutely possible to ensure everyone is housed, fed, has access to good healthcare and education, is the kind of thing they gets you labelled an extremist. But one person having more wealth than all of humanity combined ever has is...normal?

“One of these nights, I guess I must have been about nine years old, something finally did happen at one of my grandmother’s séances,” Trixie said. She’d wrapped her hands tightly around her coffee mug, as if it was an anchor. “I’d sneaked about halfway down the staircase to secretly watch…and then I saw something out of the corner of my eye.” Jason realized he was leaning forward, his elbows on the kitchen table. He picked up his own mug and forced himself to relax back into his chair. “It was my mother.” Her lips gave the slightest tremble. He swallowed, the hair rising on back of his neck. “She was standing at the foot of the stairs, looking up at me. She looked just like the day I found her dead.” Her gaze drifted over his shoulder, eyes unfocused and face pale as she recalled the terrifying memory. When she finally looked back at him, she said, “Her forehead was caved in, did I tell you that? They think my father used a can of soup to do it.” Jesus Christ. Bile, churned up by outrage, sizzled up his esophagus. “She was just standing there, looking up at me. And I pissed myself, Jason.” Trixie shook her head slowly. “Right there on the stairs. And I screamed. I screamed so loud.” He didn’t trust himself to speak. She was telling the truth, that much he could tell. Years of interrogating suspects had given him the ability to sniff out a lie a mile away. “Do you believe me?” she asked. “Yes, Trix. I do.” She nodded, taking him at his word. “Anyway, I told you all of that to tell you this: I saw a ghost in this house the other night, and I’m pretty sure it was Mina’s mother.”

Welp, welcome to the last day of 2024. Stepping across the threshold into 2025 somehow feels more serious, more consequential, than any of the other years I've been on this planet. Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. May the odds be ever in our favor.

“Did you see that?” Will asked, leaning forward to squint out the windshield. Lila’s heart lurched into a fast trot. “See what?” Outside the truck’s windows, the falling snow made it difficult to judge distances or see anything clearly. “Something ran across the road. Something big.” Her heart went from a trot to a gallop. “Where?” “Jesus, what the fuck is that?” he exclaimed, pointing straight ahead. Then she saw it. A vaguely human-shaped creature standing in the middle of the road. It was too tall, too thin, its posture too strange to be human. Demon. “Run it over!” she shrieked. He pressed the gas pedal. The wheels spun and slid, struggling to find purchase on the ice beneath the fresh snow, but then they lurched forward, picking up speed. The demon merely crouched down, as if getting ready to— Will shouted a warning just as the thing launched itself at them. Lila screamed as it landed on the truck’s hood with a heavy crash and sent them into a three-sixty spin across the icy road toward the steep embankment.
