This is the correct postmortem. I know we live in a world where terrible consequences flow from binarized point estimates with 1% or 2% margins, but in no other domain of social inquiry do we pretend that tells us a lot about the population. +
People’s inability to handle randomness continues to amaze. Half of u couldn’t believe it would truly be a coin flip, that Harris must be secretly winning. Now everyone is posting as if dem loss was inevitable and future losses are impossible to avert. God!! Grow up please

so far the only explanation i've seen that doesn't smack of "if only she'd listen to me she would have won" is "global discontent with incumbents because of inflation and post-pandemic malaise + toxic information environments"

I think this is correct, and most of my prescriptions would've clearly failed too, though I am sticking to my claim that appeals to Republicans and bipartisanship do not help and likely produce a net harm by dampening base enthusiasm.
I admit this is unproven but the results are consistent with it.
