This is a smart @davekarpf.bsky.social write-up for all who, like me, have been looping these bars all day long:
"Don't let them lead you astray,
This congress does not speak for me,
They're playing a dangerous game."
"Don't let them lead you astray,
This congress does not speak for me,
They're playing a dangerous game."
I scribbled down all my shutdown-related intrusive thoughts and put them in a blog post.

The responses this post is getting, combined with the animating grievances of large swathes of politics, has convinced me we need a kind of society wide PSA about how Buying Things Is Optional.
You don’t think video games should cost $100? Don’t buy the videogame. Buying Things Is Optional.

AAA video games should cost $100 on launch. this would still be extremely cheap for the amount of time and enjoyment you get out of them! But an audience of whiny babies has kept them literally at the same price for *two decades* despite both general inflation *and* sector-specific costs rising

LBJ was not wrong: "Some men want power simply to strut around the world and hear the tune of ‘Hail to the Chief.’ Others want it simply to build prestige, to collect antiques, and to buy pretty things. Well, I wanted power to give things to people, all sorts of things to all sorts of people."

if a 84-yo Bob Dylan, voice broken and raw, belting out "I'm not the one you want, babe, I will only let you down" in front of a stadium audience is not the quintessential Dylan, at least it's damn close.

Trump is not the first president eager to have an ABC talk show host cancelled. Back in the early 1970s, Nixon was fuming over Dick Cavett, asking his aides "is there any way we can screw him?"

Even as Jimmy Kimmel returns to the airwaves, TV networks remain more vulnerable to political pressure than ever before
President Nixon tried and failed to cancel ‘The Dick Cavett Show.’ Since then, deregulation and consolidation have made media conglomerates more willing to accommodate those in power.

This is dangerous. There's no other way to say it. Dangerous. Dangerous. Dangerous.
EARHARDT: We have radicals on the right as well. How do we fix this country?
TRUMP: I'll tell you something that's gonna get me in trouble but I couldn't care less. The radicals on the right oftentimes are radical because they don't want to see crime. The radicals on the left are the problem.

started rewatching The Sopranos for the first time since the original run and never really appreciated 1) how much of a middle-aged dad show it actually is, 2) how most everybody in the show is a fucking loser, and 3) how endlessly charming James Gandolfini was.

for what it's worth, when CBS News was accused of "deceptively editing" interviews in the 1970s Frank Stanton stood up for news department and even risked facing a jail cell for refusing a congressional subpoena.
New: CBS News has changed its interview format in reaction to complaints from DHS. According to a statement from a network spokesperson, Face The Nation will now only broadcast live or live to tape interviews

CNN: When the jobs report comes out, are you going to believe the numbers?
REP. RANDY FINE: Um, I'm going to look at the numbers. Look, the people who put these numbers together are human & fallible and make mistakes
C: It wasn't that they make mistakes
F: Numbers always tend to benefit the left

Even Spiro Agnew would be like "whoa, that's going a little far, my dude..." and Agnew was such a dick that his name was literally an anagram for grow a penis.
Two things I am following with a sense of foreboding.
1.) The ombudsman forced upon CBS News. See Brian Stelter: view.newsletters.cnn.com/messages/175...
2.) Dershowitz knocking on the Times vs. Sullivan door after losing his defamation case. See: www.cnn.com/2025/08/29/b...

"first they came for John Bolton and since everybody already hated him it wasn't a big deal and that was the end of it all" is not a poem people will remember.
Reminder: It does not matter if Lisa Cook filled out a form wrong or if the raid finds some document in a file folder in John Bolton's house. These actions are wrong no matter what because they selectively target opponents of the government. The rule of law is under attack.
